    Connecting a new electric cooker

Hi all, When we first moved into our house we had an all electric cooker that was 'hard wired' to a dedicated socket in the kitchen ( wall socket with a big red switch on it). This goes to an old fashioned 30A fuse in our consumer unit. We switched to an all gas cooker and ended up...

    tung oil problem

Hi all, I recently started oiling a solid oak worktop in our kitchen. I'm using Liberon pure tung oil. Followed instructions which were to start with a 50/50 oil / white spirit mix then wipe off after half an hour, then repeat every 24 hours gradually reducing the ratio of white...

    Double sprung hinges .. . .

Horrible things, I've just fitted a pair of heavy doors using these. Not my choice, unfortunately the architect specified them. I spent hours tweaking them so the doors shut in line and flush. Then the painters wedged them open for a week and they needed re tweaking again. Would have been so...

making a kitchen worktop out of oak floorboard offcuts

I reckon so. That'll hold the planks dead flush as well so i'll have less sanding to do. I'm also planning on routing a drip on the underside of the sink edges, routing drain channels on both sides of the sink, and two cutaways either side of the cooker into which I'm going to glue some old roof...

making a kitchen worktop out of oak floorboard offcuts

Thanks, these boards are not tongue and groove, they just butt up against another. Being offsets they have a lot of knots and shakes. Normally i'd fill them with oak dust & resin but I'm not sure how the oil (danish or tung) will sit on it. It's the lecol clear resin stuff. I'm going to...

making a kitchen worktop out of oak floorboard offcuts

Hi all I have enough offcuts of English oak floor planks (not tongue & groove) to make a new worktop for our kitchen. Going to remove the worktop tiles to reveal the ply base and screw the planks down on battens so they run over the top of the sink and then fix an oak edging strip round so it...

    day rate for a joiner

Its what I'd charge. Yes people sometimes are unhappy, but rates are rates and they get what they pay for at the end of the day. 3 years at college, £1000's worth of tools, years of experience certainly don't warrant any less than that. Simon

    Worktop join

£40 quid would be a reasonable price. Price really depends on the worktop material but also whether the worktop has a round nose on the top AND bottom. Double rounded worktops require more care when routering. Simon

    Door Hinges

Squirt some wood glue in the old holes. Whittle some timber scraps into a slightly tapered stick. Tap these firmly into the holes. Wait for the glue to set. Snap the excess timber off or lop the excess off with a chisel. Personally I wouldn't bother at all unless the new holes...

    Black spots on Oak Door

Oak is notorious for staining like this in even a hint of moisture. IMHO its not the best exterior wood to use for joinery. Structurally its brilliant though. Varnish will never protect it. If you can sand or even scrape/plane the staining out then do that and use a clear wood preserver that...

    Boarding out loft

Hiya When you say 'joists', are these actually strong enough to support a floor? Many loft joists are only strong enough to support the plaster ceiling underneath. Just be careful. 18mm t&g chipboard would be my suggestion. Simon

Thorn Olympic 38 50b boiler problem

Hi all Issue with this boiler, basically the pilot light is on but the boiler stopped firing up last night. It is a very simple installation, just got two switches on the wall, one for hot water and both on for hot water and heating. The pump comes on but just doesn't fire up. Got a...
