What to do about shed rot?

I wondered about a preserver, but wouldn't that just seal the face of the wood, and mean the moisture that travels up the body of the boards has no way out? I'm not sure it'd survive levering up, and there's only one side where there's enough room for long levers. What did you use for your...

What to do about shed rot?

No, it's not ply. That's the painted side of the cladding on the outside. Yes there are gutters, but due to poor drainage and it's location at the bottom of a slope, there's still quite a lot of standing water around the shed. I'm planning on putting in a set of french drains this year. My...

What to do about shed rot?

I've been using a garden shed (built by the house's previous owners) as my workshop for a couple years and was about to insulate it. The walls were ply with a vapour barrier behind it, but just the studs and cladding behind that. My plan was to stick a breathable membrane and kingspan between...

How to stop shed door slamming

Thanks all, I've got with a door closer as in my original post - turns out you can use it on the inside of the door just by mounting it upside down.

How to stop shed door slamming

Hi, The kids keep leaving the shed door open when getting their bikes out, and the wind can slam it shut with enough force to take off some fingers or break a limb. What I want is something that will force it to close at a slow, controlled pace, but will also allow the door to stay open...

    Ridge ventilation

OK, thanks. I was planning on using cheap loft insulation (supported by battens) between the rafters. Given that plenty of air sits inside it and its form means it won't fill every last gap, would that be a problem in terms of introducing air gaps, or is it just big voids that would be an issue?

    Ridge ventilation

My understanding was that when it's cold one side and warm the other, you get condensation forming from the moisture in the air. I may have misunderstood this though. I was planning on creating a gap between the roof deck and the roof insulation.

    Ridge ventilation

That sound preferable, but my understanding was that I would need the air gap/ventilation because my roof material (bitumen shingles) isn't breathable. Would I not suffer from moisture/condensationslowly rotting my roof OSB if there's no ventilation?

    Ridge ventilation

Not exactly. The roof has high collar ties rather than ceiling joists, as you can see: The plan is to put insulation between the joists (supported on battens) and then put a vapour barrier over it, so the main body of the shed would be sealed from the air space between the insulation and the...

    Ridge ventilation

The shed will also be used as a gym and so will be insulated. I'm no expert but my understanding was that you need a 50mm air gap between the insulation and the roof deck, and would need to be to ventilated in order to circulate that air.

    Ridge ventilation

My shed roof is going to have a ridge beam and will be shingled and I'm wondering how to ventilate it at the ridge. Looking online, the Americans seem to use either… A plastic ridge vent: Or a foam-like material one like this: I can't find either of these available in the UK, or at least...

Shed roof insulation, barriers and ventilation

Hi, I'm building a large pitched-roof shed which will mostly be used for storage but also as a gym to house the wife's treadmill, rowing machine etc. As such I was going to insulate it. For the walls, I was planning on filling the stud voids with loft insulation in between the breathable...

    Fitting bitumen shingles

Thanks both current thinking it to go with a felt underlay. I presume I can staple that on seeing as it'll effectively be nailed on when the shingles go on? If I'm using a felt underlay, I could fold and nail them at the edges as per a standard roof and then have the shingles flush to the edge...

    Fitting bitumen shingles

I was planning on doing my shed roof with these bitumen shingles: https://www.aboutroofing.com/ars-he...gles-3-square-metre-pack-black-green-red.html Have watched a few installation videos, but there's a couple things I'm not sure about… 1 - Should I use a breathable membrane between the...

Roof design for low-pitch, wide roof

I did consider that, but for various reasons it wouldn't be appropriate in this instance.

Roof design for low-pitch, wide roof

My understanding was that under permitted development you have a maximum of 2.5m when within 2m of a boundary.

Roof design for low-pitch, wide roof

Hi I'm building a 4.7 x 4.7m shed, which in order to keep it within PD and still give usable height, will only have a 15° pitch. I'm wondering what's the best way to support the roof in this instance. I'd rather not use ceiling joists to hold it together as they would eat in to headroom. Most...

Plasterboard fixings when have solid insulation

The plasterboard fixings I've used previously rely on the cavity being empty so the metal behind the board spreads out to hold it in place. The wall I need to attach some shelves to now is filled with celotex, so I need something different. Would these be up to the job, or is there something...

Removing shower cartridge from handle body

UPDATE: I made it worse…! After failing to remove the cartridge from the body, I reinstalled it and now it won't turn off at all! It's just on full blast regardless of which way the handle is turned. Is there anything obvious I might have done wrong? Or have I just broken the cartridge...
