    Cast iron fireplace with crack

Hi We are redecorating a bedroom and there is a fireplace in it that was obviously going to be replaced as a feature but previous owner never got round to. He has had the thing mostly cleaned (a bit of old plaster and some paint left on it) but the thing has a crack in it that is about 30-40...

    render query

I have been looking at the threads on this render section and am a little confused. I have a detached house (not huge, but a reasonable surface area) and the render has been done in multiple stages over the years and some of it is just falling off (badly blown). A quote we have had was for...

Roofs are supposed to keep the water out... aren't they!

I have moved into a new house (read that as money pit) and it has had a kitchen extension at some time in the past and this has a flat roof – standard bitumen felt and loose grit cover (supposedly renewed two years ago). With the recent rain we have had a big leak (stream) coming through a screw...

Shed alarm going off a lot - heat?

oooo that sounds like a good idea. I sort of suspected there may be convection currents whirling around in there all invisible like... and I suppose a breeze through a loose fitting room or summat could change them all quite a lot. I will check for the pulse count though I do not recall seeing...

Shed alarm going off a lot - heat?

Cheers people. The shed is very new and we have two cats that tend to check it out regularly so vermin is unlikely... I will check the device to see if it has become a spider home though... as we do seem to be spider central for some reason. I do have 8' of windows on one side of the shed...

    Anyone recognise these monsters!?

Might do.... I am doing it with the syringe as i want the plant to continue growing while it is absorbing the roundup.... that way the 'toxin' shopuld be spread to all the different cells of the plant and hopefully kill it. It can grow from a small bit left in the ground (0.8gm is the quote)...

    Anyone recognise these monsters!?

You have to spray it on the foliage as it is absorbed through the leaves. Putting it on the ground is virtually useless. You can get very scientific with it if you like (as I did, as I was out for revenge!) and actually inject the liquid into the hollow stems so that it drains down to the tuber...

Shed alarm going off a lot - heat?

I have a PIR alarm fitted in my shed to try to stop the local tea leaves but the bloody thing has been going off at night (around about 12pm). Checking inside all I could find was a monster spider which I dismissed... but it went off again after that. Does anyone know if the heat built up...

    Anyone recognise these monsters!?

We just bought a house that has Japanese knotweed at the bottom of the garden... fairly well established. We have dug down to remove most of the tubers (some being about 10cm diameter) which spread a long way underground (its how the reproduce as there are no females of the species in the UK...

    Laying cable

Ok, now you have scared the c*** out of me :D What looked like a relatively easy job is obviously not. This is why I love these forums... because idiots like me who fail to realise the full scope of an ensuing project can be pointed in the right direction. I will research this more...

    Laying cable

I recently removed an old shed from the garden with the intention of replacing it. In the shed I found about 120' of armoured cable (13 amp wire in the core)... and lo and behold it is enough to reach the house. Obviously the previous owners intended to lay it but never did. OK, so given that...

    Killing Ivy on a house

Cheers for that. I am tempted to take a damn flame thrower to it... but then the house could suffer  Looks like elbow grease is called for. I have started spraying it with one of those 'absorb through leaves' systemic poisons in the hope of at least stunting it. By the way, when the...

    Killing Ivy on a house

I have moved into a new (old) house and there is an ivy plant that is infesting most of the front of the house and part of the side. We will be re-rendering the whole house so the ivy needs to come down. I have sawn through all the 'trunks' of ivy going into the ground (the biggest being...

    Painting aluminium window frames

The house I am moving into has aluminium double glazing, so the frames are rather ugly. Is there any specific type of paint I should use on these frames to tart them up? A friend suggested the metal based paints that you use of wrought iron gates but I thought that might be going over the top...

    Extending concrete foundations

I am about to rip down an old shed in a the garden and replace it with a new one. There are already concrete foundations measuring 13' by 7'. I would like to put a shed up that is 14' or 15' by 8'. I therefore need to extend the concrete base. Given that the shed will not weight that much can I...

    Tree recommendations

Hi, new poster here. I am about to move into a new house and there are 8 30 foot leylandii trees down one side. Needles to say, these little eyesore are going to go asap. Looking at previous posts I am torn between hiring someone to grind them down or rip the roots and stumps out... but that...
