You need to check the motor brushes but if they are OK it is likely that the motor is faulty and the noise you are hearing is the motor sparking.

Have a look at the base of the machine where the shock absorbers bolt on. Sometimes the steel base cracks near the bolt holes. If the base is OK and the concrete blocks are not loose it will either be drum bearing or drum spider failure.

You should still run the hot taps as this should empty the pipe down to level with the top of the cylinder but that is all you need do.

I would think the Hoover technician will do whatever is neded to get the machine back to full working order for the quoted price. I would get it done but start saving some pennies to get a new Bosch machine in a couple of years time.

You said you wanted to get the front off but you may get adequate access to trace the leak by removing the lid. This is fixed with screws along its back edge. It may be leaking from the hose between the soap drawer housing and the outer drum.

The Hoover is one of the worst machines for changing bearings as you have to virtually dismantle the whole machine to lift the outer drum out the top. Not an easy one to tackle on a DIY basis.

Have you had the filter bung out? On most Bosch machines you can see the pump impellor through the filter bung aperture. If you need to renew the pump you have to take the cabinet front off rather than the back or top.

I would recommend a Zanussi, preferably a cold fill only model. These are quite a well made machine and benefit from having a plastic base. In potentially damp places the base is usually the first part to rust but not with the Zanussi.

Sounds like the door switch is on it's way out. Simple enough to change (with machine unplugged) You can get access through the door seal aperture after removing the retaining wire and peeling back part of the door seal.

SDS is a bit OTT for a job like that anyway unless the tiles are onto a concrete wall. :wink:

Only you can tell what your wall is supporting by inspection, measurements etc but if it is a water tank and it is empty you probably don't even need to remove it as it won't weigh much empty.
