I don't think a thicker rubber washer would have taken up the difference, I reckon about 10mm was required, although I never tried that so no way of knowing. Bad design of waste I think as the part which takes the rod for the pop-up should have been a) higher, or b) a longer thread would have...

Thanks for replies. Job now done, I used M6 Spring Toggles, replacing the normal screw head bolt with 6mm threaded rod cut to length. Worked a treat.

Thanks foxhole yea I should have strengthened wall, think my next Step is to try spring toggles exchanging the normal bolt for threaded Rod cut to length as the screw head with the toggle is no use to me.
