HSE - Safe Gas Installations ACOP consultation starts today

The HSE said there would be a clarification of what it would mean to be competent to work on gas in this new ACOP. The details are at paragraphs 57 to 61. I think this means if you are not on the GSR and want to work on gas (eg DIY) then you must have the same up to date training and...

warm air heating - hate it

Which ones.? Exactly what I wanted to ask. Which ones? If it has CE mark and is to British Standard EN 50291 then what could be wrong with it? Although I know I would recommend Honeywell or Fireangel just because I am familiar with these.

GAS SAFE question related to HOB

That is correct - except if someone is doing it in the course of their work - eg kitchen fitters, builders removal companies - according to TB - because other Health & Safety at Work legislation applies. But connecting the hose itself is "work" - pipework - i believe.

GAS SAFE question related to HOB

"Work" has a specific definition in the Gas Safety Regs 1998 and anyone working on gas should be aware or this and other parts of those regs. The official guidence to those regs (the ACOP) says that the definition of Gas Work and all other parts of the Gas Safety Rgs equally apply to those...

GAS SAFE question related to HOB

BS6172:2010 11.1.3 Hob can be fitted with a flexible connector unless MI states otherwise. - I also thought it had to be rigid pipework - but I don't need to know in my job.:) Of course RGI who do cookers will know that the standard goes on to say other important safety stuff about...

Thoughts on this quote for central heating system.

To check the price on any job like this you need to get more quotes and then if there are big discrepancies check they are like for like. Ask the guys who have quoted. The cheapest may end up being the most expensive - because that one could have left a lot of stuff out and leave you with...

    Flueless gas fire ventilation

Exactly the same here. And the extremely experienced and competent RGI I know will they play dumb, they might say that they don't have the right tools, that they don't know how it works... etc etc. because they have no intention of working for someone who thinks he knows more than they...

Will I be forced to have a water meter?

I had heard something about us having compulsory water meters thrust upon by 2016. I am in Kent and I think it is to do with where you are in the country and droughts. Bad news for us - not just that we are a family of five. But with a husband as a plumber if we get leaks or dripping taps -...

    Flueless gas fire ventilation

The case was Cecil Crane http://www.hse.gov.uk/press/2011/coi-wm-46611.htm Book not finished - I was just recalling details from my head - I had to go to another computer to look up the reference. "overwhelming" evidence. If you are willing to look objectively I'd be happy to email you...

    Flueless gas fire ventilation

If you must have a flueless gas fire - please have CO alarms in that room and in rooms above. I don't have a gas fire and we do not fit them. I do know a think or two about them, however as I am researching for a forthcoming book on the subject. The evidence against flueless gas fires is...

I hate to rake it up, but here's HSE's version of Competence

Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 Approved Code of Practice and guidance (2011 edition) introduction page 11 states: "The terms ‘gas engineer’ and ‘engineer’ are not defined in GSIUR but are used in the guidance and ACOP; in this context they mean any person who carries out...

I hate to rake it up, but here's HSE's version of Competence

There certainly have been deaths due to gas installations by people who are incompetent and were not qualified (and not GSR registered). I don't know about DIY off the top of my head now, but I can think of prosecutions of by HSE of DIYers. But as I said - they were prosecuted because their...

I hate to rake it up, but here's HSE's version of Competence

Very true - infact there is a TB about exactly that in the members only section of GSR. I think it is called "WORK" But those of us with access to TB on members only section of GSR are not the people who need to read it! Doitall. I understand why you say I am wrong... I think it is because...

I hate to rake it up, but here's HSE's version of Competence

That's the sort of thing I do! I like you, perhaps we should get together to read BS and TBs late into the night! Seriously, though. The internet is saturated with people writing about their DIY gas work (ok they are often americans - so I investigated more and found out DIY gas work is...

    Excessive gas usage

Wow - sounds high to me just comparing it to my own gas bill but I have got a different system to you! You been there over a year so have you had this checked sooner? I remember a property that was divided into 2 flats and the gas bills were going to the wrong flats - for years! One flat...

    Pricing/Charges etc

I hesitate to join in here - i am not a plumber but I do the book keeping. Firstly, I agree with the principle that we price some work according to how much we do or don't want it and very unpleasant jobs are priced very high - that can be because we don't like the look of the job, the...
