    Flue pipe removal

Thanks, I have a spare ridge tile. It looks like the current setup is a ridge tile with a hole through, so I think that a roofer could replace the ridge tile. Access isn't the easiest though, that's why I was wondering if it could just be pulled off and replaced with a cap of some sort. I saw...

    Flue pipe removal

There is an old flue pipe that runs up the cavity in the wall and out through the roof. On the top there is a metal sphere that spins. The house is about 44 years old. The gas fire is no longer there, the metal sphere makes a noise in the wind as I think the bearings have gone. The metal...

Gas flue - Replacing spinning ball thing on roof (Ed.)

We want to throw it away, we don't like the look of it. But I want to buy something to replace it. I would like to have the replacement thing ready, so I can just give it to them to replace when they are on the roof. I really don't fancy going up to measure it Are replacement things a...

Gas flue - Replacing spinning ball thing on roof (Ed.)

Our house was built in 1979 and has one of the spinning silver things on the top of the flue. I presume to keep birds away. I presume a previous owner added it because no other house around here has one. The flue is from an old gas fire which is no longer there. The flue goes in the cavity of...

    Gloworm boiler error F22

Thanks, it seemed to do the trick. Left it running for about 10 minutes with the silver plug out and it dribbling into a pot. Reset the boiler and it kicked back in. I couldn't hear any air coming out, but the heating has remained on since.

    Gloworm boiler error F22

Yes it has the large silver disc in the middle which comes out. I'll run it with it loosened to see if it removes some air

    Gloworm boiler error F22

The drain plugs have a square drive on them, as I start to undo them, the out knurled part also starts to undo, I presume it shouldn't really. If I undo the knurled part, and then undo the centre part until it comes out. You can see a rubber o ring on the centre part, I can't see inside the...

    Gloworm boiler error F22

About 4 or 5 years ago we had an issue with our Gloworm boiler where it came up wit F22. It is a conventional boiler and we don't use it a great deal, if it all for the warmer months. We use electric for hot water and don't have any heating on. We tend to start to use the heating in Nov time and...

Can anyone tell me exactly what this is under a manhole cover?

Just to update a little on this... The title deeds showed a covenant allowing the electricity board to access the land to maintain and replace underground cables. The cable shown on the map for the covenant actually runs in the neighbouring field about 4m away from this inspection chamber...

    Installing fence post holes

I've got a big SDS cordless Makita plus a couple of smaller Makita combi drills. I was looking at a petrol two handled auger at £185, not much more than £1 per post and could probably resell it after. Seems better value than hiring especially if I'm going to do it over many days...

    Installing fence post holes

It is a funny one as I'm extremely busy, however I quite enjoy doing things like this because it is very different to my regular job. There is also no rush to get it done, so I can spend a few hours each weekend for a few months to get it done. I would like to have something that will do the...

    Installing fence post holes

I've got a decent cordless SDS - is that good enough to drill many 4" holes in the soil?

    Installing fence post holes

I need to add a fair bit of fencing (200m or so) It is going to be 100mm round posts (1.8m). With rails. I need to keep costs as low as possible and don't mind it taking a while to do, but we will need to put 100-150 posts in. I was thinking about one of the petrol augers with a 4" auger bit...

    Mains water leak

Pipe replaced. It now runs down the drive and then through the floor and into the garage, then along the wall. New stop tap fitted then 15mm pipe to join to where the old stop was. On the first section the leak was actually on a join. There was a brass join about half way down the drive and it...

    Mains water leak

Yes it is on my property, so isn't a question of if the water board are liable it not. Now it is a question on whether or not it is covered under insurance. The insurance are saying if it is damaged say from vehicles going over, it from tree roots, it if I'd put my spade through it, then it...

    Mains water leak

It is 43 years old. The water board told me that it has a lifespan of 40 years but I've also been told it has a lifespan of 100 years.

    Mains water leak

That sounds about right. The water board turn off the stop in the road, then remove the meter or the plug where the meter would go and connect up a pipe. They then ask you to turn off the stop tap in the house. They then pump a gas mix into the length of pipe. They then use a sniffer machine...

    Mains water leak

Well we ended up speaking to the home insurance who sent someone out for most of the day yesterday to look at it. They dig a hole at the top of the drive and a hike at the bottom of the drive and were able to work out that there was a leak between the top and the bottom of the drive. They then...

    Mains water leak

Yes, in our back garden we have a manhole cover for a shared sewer, it feeds from some of the houses up the road as well as ours joining in. Ours joins at this point, but you can see water running from further up, not a massive flow rate but it runs all the time with clear water. Our supply pipe...

Can anyone tell me exactly what this is under a manhole cover?

The three of them are all on the top of that. They are basically touching each other they are that close together. The two outer covers are those heavy concrete ones. The centre one is a metal cover with CEGB written on it. I have found that CEGB stands for Central Electricity Generation Board...
