    Floorboards

Hi, We are going to get some old floorboards sanded and possibly gaps filled. Any views on whether it will look strange to only fill some gaps e.g. not all the boards have wide gaps / tongues missing. And one or two boards have been lifted before and have screws i.e. for rad pipes below. I...

    Cracks & Stitching

So I've looked up about the length and positioning - the advice is to use 1m lengths for a single crack, illustrations show a bar placed with its central point in line with the crack. However, in my situation the space is quite cramped and the crack is at the edge of the small wall close to a...

    Cracks & Stitching

Hey thank you the info, thats really helpful. As I say the cracks are not really wide and have been there good few years, so I just want to repoint but thought that this sort of approach would hold it together better. Its helpful to know I might be able to find a builder / bricklayer who can...

    Cracks & Stitching

Hi, is crack stitching / bedding pieces of metal into mortar joints a specialist job? I ask because there is a wall with some cracks down it that needs pointing. Cracks have been been there years - internal, exposed bricks in a cupboard, the crack runs down in between and around bricks - its...

    Spalling

Hi I wonder if anyone could advise on options for reparing a few spalling bricks. They are not external, so are not exposed to rain - they are in the coal shed underneath the stairs - so it is an unheated space but nonetheless, not exposed to the elements. I dont know what caused it or how many...

    Floorboard Screws

Will be sanding and laquering an old floorboard soon and whilst most of the boards will be nailed down, for a couple I will use screws to help with lifting them in future. I dont mind the fact that these minimal screws will be on show, but just wondered if the varnish will gunk up the screw...

    Floorboard Lifting

I am going to be lifting some old floorboard and want to minimise damage as will be getting them sanded and finished. Planning on using a multi tool to cut the tongue, as thought that would be neater and easier to control than one of those electric reciprocating saws. Once I have one board up I...

    external door threshold

ok ty. so none of this applies to extensions then.

    external door threshold

Are there actual building regs that state front and back external doors to a house should have Ground Level flush with interior floor level? I have seen some references that indicate this, but it would seem at odds with building regs pertaining to keeping 150 between dpc and ground level. In...

    Loft Floor

ok great thank you. And just to check, so when you put this stuff down, you actually take up the floorboards and put this direct on to joists?

    Loft Floor

    Loft Floor

Cheers. There is nothing laid yet. So wondering what to lay on the joists in prep for tiles. Is no more ply a cement board? I was thinking of chipboard (or floorboards) then cement board. So can you put cement board direct on to joists?

    Loft Floor

As per above, what do people advise to cover the joists in a loft bathroom - chipboard, ply or floorboards. Cement board will be used on top of the flooring for tiling.

    Loft Floor

Loft is being converted and I am thinking of getting soft wood floorboards put down instead of chipboard, just because I will leave them exposed and I guess easier to take up if I ever need to. For the bathroom I will be tiling so I presume I need ply, so would the ply go straight onto joists...

    Insulated Timber Wall

Hi, If a stud wall is used with insulation used instead of block for a hip to gable conversion internal, are there any issues when it comes to fixing to the wall. I read an other thread where someone said you need to be careful not to pierce vapour sheet otherwise could have problems...

    Roofing Job

fair enough. Any views on whether to add fascias to gable end or leave them off. I guess they are not necessarily needed.

    Roofing Job

Hi I need some advice.. am getting full re-roof done with clay plain tiles as it in terrible state, plus getting loft converted with dormer. Have also asked for guttering, soffits and fascias to be done. Roofer going to cap fascia's .....is that ok? I cannot tell if existing timber is rotten...

    Clay Tiles

Ok thank you, I will get some samples of clay - most seem to be machine made. I presume these brands do the tiles in similar size to original rosemary type as well as corners etc.

    Cleaning Bricks

ok thanks. Its only a small section of a wall. I would prefer not to do the cleaning in situ as it is the front wall, so people will be walking by. So safer for me to do in the garden. So any rubber gloves will do? I might just try chip away first and then try some diluted bleach initially.
