    Fitting new lino

They were re-doing the floor at work a while ago, so I took an offcut, which is big enough to do my bathroom floor - brilliant. I'm going to lift the floorboards and lay a sheet of something down; I'll also prime it just in case water gets in. I'm then going to cut the lino and... well, now...

White blotches on Red Emulsion wall

Tricky one this Griff, It could be one of a few things. Without seeing the blotches it’s difficult to say what it is. Saponification causes chalky, blotches. It’s caused by the minerals in mortar leaching through, but it’s unlikely on the inside wall of a Portacabin. It’s unlikely to...

    Cracks in ceiling re-apperaing

Small cracks in plaster are not unusual and rarely something to worry about other than they look bad. They appear for a couple of reasons. Movement is possible as it’s a new house. The timbers dry out and shrink a little and cracks appear. For me the most likely reason is that the...

What colour gloss goes with magnolia walls?

I’ve done some ‘wacky’ colours and they always, ALWAYS, with no exception, make the whole room look dreadful and because it’s coloured it’s a monster to paint over again when the customer realised how stupid they’ve been.

    Undercoat with soft sheen?

As Joe says, the vinyl soft sheen is not for skirting boards and doors. You can put it on the skirting, but it won’t last very long and you’ll get a pour finish. If you want something that sits between gloss and matt then maybe you could consider eggshell, which is the right thing for that...

    Insulating under wooden floor boards???

Well, yes, I’m hoping not to get rot in the way that we all hope not to get rot under the floor. There is ample air movement under the floor void and there is a couple of inches between the insulation and the floor for air movement; helped by the radiator pipes causing convection currents.

sticking lifting corners of lining paper

There are many things that cause paper not to adhere correctly, but caulk is unlikely to be it assuming you did use decorators caulk and not silicon. Ultimately what you need to do is stick the paper down; whether you use border adhesive or super glue. Peek behind the lifted corner and make...

    Insulating under wooden floor boards???

Hi, I ripped up my old floor some years ago and laid oak flooring – it looks lovely. I insulated between the joists with Cellotex to stop drafts and try and keep the floor warmer because I was losing the carpet. Instead of butting the insulation tight against the floor-boards I installed...

    Interior doors

Nice doors. There’s a lot of different treatments for interior doors. If they are left as wood then the usual finish would be varnish, or a stain. Much more than and I’d be guessing and you don’t want to mess up your doors. It really is hard to see from the piccies what they have been...

    Biscuit jointer

Thanks both, that’s good advice, as expected from the boards. I’ve never owned a Silverline tool. I’ve always saved and bought middle range professional, but this time I know there’s no point in me spending the money. Two quick questions: Are Silverline any good? What do I need to...

    Biscuit jointer

Hiya folks. I’m after a dedicated biscuit jointer, not a router bit, and want some recommendations. Here’s the key point of what I’m looking for – it’ll be DIY only, so I don’t want to pay more than £50 for it. All comments about what to look out for and any recommendation will be...

    Interior doors

That’s a tricky one to answer because without knowing the finish on the other doors it’s all but impossible to tell you what to finish the new door in to make it look like the others. Where did you buy the door? If it was from a DIY shed then what is the door called?

    Bosun mitre saw, any good?

A couple of years ago I bought one of the Rage sliding saws. It’s very good and I use it a lot. I can certainly vouch for its durability, but its accuracy... well, that’s a different story. Unfortunately it’s just not that accurate and almost certainly not a saw I’d buy again. I know it’s not...
