Blown 30 amp fuse - age?

It was an old ceramic type with asbestos in the middle and the screws holding the wire were both tight. It's a bit strange since 2.0 am has to be when the lowest load is likely to be experienced.

Blown 30 amp fuse - age?

That was implied in my post that how could the VCR have caused it when two lower rated fuses survived. I still think it is either age or a rat. Steve

Blown 30 amp fuse - age?

Hi, it's just a 5 amp as expected for that sort of device. Perhaps it's just a coincidence and I thought it might have been the extension board that it is plugged into but that is fused and all the other things plugged in work OK. I haven't used it since I started using the PVR so it might have...

Blown 30 amp fuse - age?

Perhaps I was too hasty - might have found the culprit. A VHS recorder that hasn't been used for a while as PVR is used now - that was in the circuit connected to TV and appears not to work anymore. The fuse is intact however. Should have known better than to slander those poor rats...

Blown 30 amp fuse - age?

There aren't any external sockets that I can locate - there has been external lighting which is not working. Perhaps my dad (previous owner) used some dodgy fusewire - unlikely as he was quite capable with electrical things in general but he was no electrician. Steve

Blown 30 amp fuse - age?

Seems a bit odd that everything appears to be working OK after I mended the fuse. I had a thought that perhaps it might have been the immersion heater but that is working fine too. All the appliances should fail at the fused plugs shouldn't they. Perhaps it was shoddy Chinese fuse wire (sorry...

Blown 30 amp fuse - age?

I'll look into the flickering light - has not been much of an issue but it might mean the whole wiring does need a proper check. Cheers, Steve

Blown 30 amp fuse - age?

Perhaps it was just age or the rat idea could be the reason. It is probably the season for them to be about under the house. I hope the little blighter learnt his lesson - I'll expect to find some teeth embedded in a cable and a blackened corpse nearby. That assumes I can persuade some kid with...

Blown 30 amp fuse - age?

Thanks for the prompt replies. It certainly woke me up! I have had issues with a switched off light (new type) flickering too. The semi is a two bedroom bog standard. I could perhaps do the rewiring myself but the regs don't attract me or the work involved! Steve ps The fridge is...

Blown 30 amp fuse - age?

Hi all I'm not an electrician by any means but retired from mechanical engineering. I have inherited a semi-detached bungalow which has mostly old wiring from when it was built - mid 60's I think. About 2 am the 30 amp fuse blew for room sockets. Nothing has been changed recently and since...
