Changing all halogen downlights - stick with GU5.3 or go GU10?

I have 10+ halogen downlights in the house. They are 12v GU5.3 (MR16) with transformers. They have been in over 20 years and various parts are looking scruffy and even perishing, so I am going to change over to LED while renovating. Are there any technical or safety considerations in going to...

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

No but I think the EU has ;-)

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

A good night's sleep has helped me realise that I have gone around in one huge circle here (especially once I realised how the island was actually wired in!) I could re-title this whole thread as "can I put a 13A plug on my new cooker?" With the huge caveat of it being better to put a new...

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

Yes that is where I got confused. Apologies. Forget the 5A. Again you are spot on and I hadn't really thought that through had I! Of course that would break the ring. I could get around that by adding a link between the two sockets which are next to each other, but why bother. I think I am...

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

The kitchen ring does have 32A MCB - that was part of my discovery process!! I was looking at the wrong circuit. I agree on the correct path is a new 16A radial. But if I ensure I have a 13A fuse on the spur it would protect the ring main. Thanks for all your help guys. You have been great.

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

So John, you didn't add the "5A for the cooker outlet" - rightly because I don't have one! But could I disconnect one of the pair of 2.5mm2, add a 20A DP switch at the island end, and use the diversity calc to say its fine? Or add in the 5A and then I am in trouble again. Strictly speaking its...

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

Hi John, I do like your thinking. I will google this diversity thing some more :-) Thanks

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

It gets worse. I have been onto the manufacturers website and they rate it officially at 3.5kW :-( Hence the 16A in this case. So I have to get a sparky in to put in a new circuit for the 16A, or I look around for a strictly specified 3kW.

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

IMG_1321 by bobthedob posted 26 Apr 2018 at 11:47 AMYeah! Found them. Going to a pair of double sockets as you predicted. Now, anyone got any bright ideas on what to do next? (Apart from running a new cable from the fuse box??)

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

Yes I agree with you, but the stone floor and water-based underfloor heating make me think they will have gone for easiest shortest route? If I am lucky. I have checked a few sockets and they all feed down from the ceiling (as you would expect) I will keep going until I find some sockets feeding...

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

Completely agree with you - probably some damned EU regulation :-) All cookers and ovens specify a minimum of "16A hard wired" even for these lower amps - as Steve Wright would say "its the law" Pain in the backside

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

Doh. Bad news. Its actually on the damned kitchen ring circuit. Somewhere the pair must come out at a double socket on the ring main - I will have to go around the sockets to find with one. I'm screwed :-( I guess I could find where the pair from the island come out on one of the wall...

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

Good point. I will double check that back at the fuse box.

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

Thanks for the quick reply. Should I connect the pair of cables or only one should be sufficient in this case? eg; 16A MCB -> single 2.5mm2 -> Nice 20A DP switch as shown above

Converting to a 16A cooker switch?

Currently I have a 13A cooker connected to a 13A plug and socket in an island in the kitchen. It was installed about 18 years ago. The cooker needs replacing and everything is 16A these days, even for a 3kW oven :-( The existing 13A socket in the island is a single radial circuit with nothing...

    Miele W844 Motor Brushes

Thanks for the reply John I put it all back together without taking a picture - doh! But your comment makes me wonder if I was just looking at the whole connection including was the flat spade connects to? When fitting to the plastic motor cover, what does the flat spade connect to, if anything?

    Miele W844 Motor Brushes

Hi Guys, First of all thanks to everyone who contributes to this forum! Great advice, and saved a fortune. I had the 'flashing rinse/no spin' problem and found all of the answers here. Very simple soldering job (RS Components £5, and that included spare relay and 10 resistors!) Two new dampers...

Include external battery for emergency power outages

After thinking about that diode comment I have added a relay on the -ve lead from the external battery to the internal battery and powered it off the mains. If the mains is on, then the relay is open and the external battery is not connected. If the mains fails then the relay will close and...
