Yes. But it's OK - they still get paid!

    6 megawatt battery backup system?

It's a small coastal town with a population of @10,000 and this issue has really split the community. The turbines would be directly opposite (within 350m) of an ancient & protected fishing village. They the largest local employer and many people, while they may not like it, are resigned that...

    6 megawatt battery backup system?

Thanks for your further input. We wrote to Siemens (still waiting for a reply) & someone at the "national grid". They didn't know of any current battery technology that would enable them to operate "off grid" for any useful length of time, but they did point us to this recent case in...

    6 megawatt battery backup system?

That is a great idea. Just hope it's not too late as we're waiting on the outcome of the planners. Thanks

    6 megawatt battery backup system?

Many thanks for all your replies. Well off topic I know, but really do appreciate your expertise and opinions. I think this confirms our suspicions that contrary to their claims, they WILL have to be connected to the grid to guarantee continuity of supply. And therefore the only reason...

    6 megawatt battery backup system?

That's exactly what I suspected. There has been a lot of local objection to their plans. These turbines will totally dominate the historic skyline of a small east coast town. The company claim the only reason they can't relocate the turbines is because they will be off grid, so they need to...

    6 megawatt battery backup system?

Thanks guys. They say a battery storage system will enable them to go "off grid", so I guess it should power their plant (pharmaceutical factory) whenever their wind turbines are not turning. How many hours or days that might be, I'm not sure - you can never tell with the wind...

    6 megawatt battery backup system?

Don't laugh :) A local business is planning to erect two 130m wind turbines to supposedly power their factory providing 6 megawatts. There have been objections but the firm claim the turbines cannot be relocated as they will be using some form of localised battery backup system... Is...

    Power to cabin

Thanks mate - that's exactly what we will do. I'm sure I could have rigged something up that would have been OK, but like you said, peace of mind & paperwork are worth the extra bit of expense. Cheers

    Power to cabin

Thanks. Calor gas bottle would be do-able, (although I had wanted a small electric heater on a timer to take the chill out in the mornings), but we would require more power for a proper PC than the laptop. Sounds like batteries & solar panels is a no-go then.

    Power to cabin

Yeah - I checked out the prices on Screwfix  On a different tack... The cabin came supplied with a couple of solar panels (2 x 40W) to charge a 12V battery & run 3 lights. Could a suitable system be devised / upgraded to run a computer, some lights & occasionally a 2kw heater & how...

    Power to cabin

Thank you for your helpful reply. I'm rapidly coming to conclusion that unless you're already a qualified sparky, then mains cabling is not a DIY job. Maybe you should change your site logo to diyNOT ....... ? :) Seemed like a simple project. Run a cable to a garden shed. My original thought...

OH God - think we'll just pay an electrician then

    Power to cabin

Hi - we're looking to add a supply to our new log cabin / office in our back garden (about 15m away from the CU). We anticipate it will have 1 PC, a 2kw electric heater, a small fridge and some basic lighting. We intend to take a 6mm T&E cable from its own connection in the CU in the house...
