    Tiling new plaster

Out of curiosity, can you give a few examples of an acrylic bonding agent - something like SBR ?

Paint came off onto roller when painting above shower

Zinsser peel stop is the product you need - as its name suggests, it stops paint peeling. misterhelpful is right by saying that the ceiling wasn't given a mistcoat, and his advice about sorting it out may well work but if not then get some peel stop.

    Little Greene & co

If you are suffering from brush marks then maybe you need to try adding some xim or floetrol and a splash of water - different brushes may also be worth a go too ! It does take a little practice to get used to WB paints - they may not give the high sheen of an OB gloss but I find that WB paint...

    Cord or Cordless (Makita)

If you are only going to use it occasionally then a corded one might be worth thinking about as batteries do need to be used, ie charged and discharged from time to time or they will loose their ability to hold a charge. However, I say this without experience as it has never happened to me...

painting over silk finish emulsion ?

Oh yes..! I did detail it all, with links to show what things like 123 cost. Too many times I have allowed £15 for some paint forgetting that the days of £15 a gallon paint are long gone..

painting over silk finish emulsion ?

Thanks for that dc - I wouldn't have thought of using gardz - I bought a gallon of it a while back but have never tried it 'cos i don't really know when it can be used aside from the drywall thing and after stripping wallpaper. As for the quote - I have since discovered that there was a quote...

    priming over glossy patches

Zinsser make some of the best primers as far as I know, so I would suggest something like 123 plus or if you can stand the smell, coverstain. Both are excellent products, 123 plus is water based so smells less and some say it isn't as good as Coverstain - I think I agree, but for your job 123...

painting over silk finish emulsion ?

Cheers Robbie. I have been doing this sort of work for many years but have never come across this situation for some reason. 123 plus is something I use for so many jobs, but given that my quote was about 40% more than the next closest I was wobbling, feeling that I was doing something wrong...

painting over silk finish emulsion ?

I recently quoted for a job that had silk emulsion on the ceilings. I suggested that it was rubbed down, then given a coat of Zinsser 123plus then 2 coats of vinyl matt. I guess this is slightly over the top, but I don't like to cut corners, and have not had to do it before, so wanted to be...

    Floetrol

I should have added that I now use xim latex extender more as floetrol has gone stringy once or twice. As dcdec says, just add to what paint you put into your kettle - I use about 20-25mm per litre roughly, but it is more a 'how-it-feels' thing - you sort of know when paint is the right...

    Undercoat kitchen cabinets

I am not an expert in F and B paints but have heard that their paints work best as a system - ie use their undercoat. From my experience of painting kitchen units I would also suggest giving a proper clean with Krud Kutter or meths and then priming with Zinsser coverstain - this may be overkill...

    Floetrol

I use it in acrylic trim paint, but never felt the need to use it in emulsion as diluting it with water does the job. It does as it claims - helps reduce brushmarks and keeps the wet edge longer so is worth the cost for me. The only downside is the extra cost but as I said, it is worth it for me.

Removing unused chimney breast - needs regs ?

Cheers Tony - the chimney is not connected to any other walls so seems to be non structural or at least not holding anything else up ! Why is it all so complicated ? The house is a 1930's solid concrete block built place if that makes much difference...

Can you give me a link please ? Thanks !

Removing unused chimney breast - needs regs ?

Many thanks noseall - the chimney is not on a party wall. I cannot see any reason why there is anything to do other than remove the brickwork and clear up, but as there seem to be so many people here who know a lot about the regs I thought it worth asking and you have come up trumps for me -...

Removing unused chimney breast - needs regs ?

We recently bought a house which had the chimney stack removed at some stage many years ago but the chimney breast was left both upstairs and down with decorative fireplaces I am wondering if it is OK to remove the breast upstairs without building regs, as obviously it no longer has a stack to...

    Cutting slate??

Is there the money to buy a slate cutter - they are only about £20 I think...! Yup, a quick google shows this - I used to have something very similar and it did the job perfectly ...

    Are joist hangers essential ?

That's a massive relief - thanks ! I am struggling to get my head around what can be done and what needs to be approved by the BI. I want to improve my house, will do my best to keep to any regulations but am concerned that at times some rules seem to go against what I see as common sense -...
