    Is there any way of removing paint from copper pipes, such that they can subsequently be soldered? I'm worried that if I go at them with wire wool, the resulting coarse surface won't solder properly.

    It's on my Mother in Law's house, and has started spraying water at high pressure out of it, about once every three days. She has discovered that hitting it with a can opener stops it, which is not especially a problem, unless she's out... She doesn't know if it's hot water or cold water...
