Sorry, let me rephrase the question. Is there another solution to the two parallel top RSJ's e.g. a central, single (wider) RSJ running under the ridge. Obviously I'm not just planning on removing the beams, I'm hoping for an alternative solution.

Thanks for the replies guys. The roof is directly above, and it's right on the edge below the guttering, so my first thought was water damage too. It's dry, so i think it's been sorted but i'll get a full survey done to make sure.
