Just to add in case it's relevant, the ground floor is a suspended timber floor with no access to get under the floor

    Advice on leak detection companies

Hi I'm wondering if anyone has any advice or recommendations regarding leak detection companies in England? Basically I've got a central heating system losing pressure. I've had the boiler checked by a plumber. It's a 2 story house and there's no stains on any ceilings so I suspect wherever the...

    Shower mixer getting stiff

cheers, I think I'll have a go at greasing the valve first. Is it just a case of loosening with a large wrench (see the photos on my first post)? Do I need to isolate from the water supply before doing this? cheers

    Shower mixer getting stiff

Hi I've got a concealed shower mixer, which has got stiffer to turn on over time. Basically to turn the shower on, you turn a handle to rotate the it by half a turn, so about 180 degrees, on the attached photo, this is the white lever pointing down. Over the last couple of years, this has got...

Can I turn down the central heating temperature on combi boiler if I have TRVs?

Thanks to everyone who replied. So it sounds like there is no problem with turning the CH temp down on combi boiler if you've got TRVs, which is good. I've turned mine down now. We'll see how how it goes when winter arrives Cheers

Can I turn down the central heating temperature on combi boiler if I have TRVs?

Thanks - can you recall whether they mentioned TRVs in the programme you heard? specifically whether you can turn the temperature down if you've got TRVs?

Can I turn down the central heating temperature on combi boiler if I have TRVs?

Yes thats exactly what I thought. Given the gas price rises that are coming, if it true that TRVs require the temperature on the boiler to be turned right up then I might just remove them all and replace with traditional valves so that I can turn the boiler temp down. But let's see if anyone in...

Can I turn down the central heating temperature on combi boiler if I have TRVs?

Hi, I've got a combi boiler. I was thinking of turning down the temperature of the heating on the boiler (i.e. on the boiler itself not the temperature on the thermostat). Reading up on this it sounds like setting this as low as possible is the best option in terms of reducing gas usage - to try...

Composite door with bolt sticking out of hinge

Hi I've got a composite door that has 4 hinges. I've noticed that the top hinge has a bolt sticking out the top of it, which I'm pretty sure didn't used to be there, so I'm thinking its worked itself loose over time. It is pushed the plastic cover up and is sticking out the top of the hinge by...

Cable post lamps off existing junction box

Hi I've got an outdoor security light at the front of the house - cable exits the external wall into a junction box and then the light connects off the junction box. I've stuck a photo below. I'm relaying the driveway this year and thinking about fitting a couple of free standing post lights at...

Gap between sections of window in curved bay

Thanks for the replies, and thanks crank39 for the vocabulary. So what I think I'll do then is squish some silicone into the gap, from inside and outside. Just thinking I'll probably use 2 different silicone, inside just a normal white anti-mould silicone but I was thinking get something like...

Gap between sections of window in curved bay

Hi I've got a curved bay at the front of the house with upvc window that is in 5 parts, between each part is a vertical tube shaped section to allow the window to curve around the bay. I've uploaded 2 photos to show this. Where each section of window meets the vertical tube section there is some...

Nest Thermostat (with Open Therm) on Worcester Bosch

Hi - Just wondering if this sorted itself out after leaving for a few days or if you had to do anything else to sort it? I'm asking because I've also got a worcester boiler and was thinking of getting a nest thermostat and have also come across that nefit EMS /opentherm adapter, so I was very...

Need to remove oak mantel piece which is gorilla glued in place

Thanks sxturbo - you've got me thinking there, if I cut out the plasterboard as you say I'll still have the problem that the mantel needs to lift upward first before coming away from the wall because of the metal clips, however I could probably get a longer multi tool blade and cut between the...

Need to remove oak mantel piece which is gorilla glued in place

Hi I've got an oak mantel that I want to remove from the wall without damaging the plaster as much as possible. The wall is dot and dab. The mantel piece is attached to some clips that screwed into the brick wall, which it would just lift off but lifting it vertically upward, however it was...

Anyone used foil breather as a radiant barrier in loft?

Hi I've been reading about how you can attach foil breather membrane to the underside of rafters in the loft space as a way of cooling the loft space in sunny weather, and therefore hopefully cooling the house a bit. This is known as a radiant barrier and basically works by reflecting the heat...

    How to remove shower waste

OK so its fixed. I didn't need to take the trap off in the end - the leak was coming from the outlet (as Hugh Jaleak mentioned) - it hadn't been tightened and was really loose. So an easy fix. Just got to patch up the kitchen ceiling now.
