Best way to keep a check on kids text messages?

What phones have they got? iOS, Android, Windows, Blackberry, other? Are you trying to do this discreetly (could be controversial) or will it be a case of letting them know you're monitoring messages and putting something on their phone with their consent? Either way, if they want to...

How do I join this cable?

So is lead actually banned in solder then? I bought 63:37 tin:lead solder off Amazon for this job last week and it worked a treat.

How do I join this cable?

Funnily enough, I think you're right. I bought a new plug in iron for £7 and some lead solder and the above cable joining went fine. The lead solder was so much better to work with that I'm fairly convinced the lead free was my issue before...

    What is this component?

Brilliant, thank you. Looks like I'll have 24 spares as well because they come in a minimum 25 pack!! Thanks for all your help, Freddo, that's made life a lot easier

    What is this component?

I've got a non-temp controlled one and a desolder pump. May ask someone more skilled to have a go anyway though as I don't want to balls up the PCB. How are these photos, any better?

    What is this component?

Thanks Freddo; it definitely has an X2 on it. Other components are in the way so I cannot see all the markings, but this image shows the legible bits:

    What is this component?

Thanks freddo. The break seems to be in the leg of the capacitor, so hopefully someone can carefully melt the solder and remove it then add a new one. Any idea if I can pick up the matching component from anywhere? I've emailed the manufacturer but feel it's unlikely they'll supply one...

    What is this component?

It's an electric garage door, does anyone know what the component circled in red is? Secondly, does anyone know how I'd fix it as the component has come off the circuit board at one end.

    Garden building as office

I'll dig them out over the next few days as they're not on my iPad anymore... I don't personally have a landline phone in the house or office, just use it for broadband. Technically I guess you could use one of the pairs in a Cat6 wire and put a phone plug on it? You wouldn't get voice the way...

Best Credit Cards Payments app/ reader?

Check out iZettle too, I've seen that in practice and it seems a good bit of kit.

    Garden building as office

I did exactly the same. Got a roughly 7 x 14' T&G tannalised shed. It was the thickest timber they did too but cannot remember how thick. Just shy of £1k delivered and built. I had a partition in the middle and a door in each end too. One end I just added racking to use it as a storage shed...

How do I join this cable?

Well that's a spot of luck, just chopped one open and I have a red, black and yellow. Black must be the common ground but at least it's a cable, so easy enough to solder. Let's hope the others are the same. Now to work out why my gas soldering iron won't melt solder these days...

ADT alarm in new house going off

Can you not completely unplug/disconnect the power for now until you find a solution? That said, power outage will probably set it off. There is an alarm specific section on the forum, probably better to post there as you'll get more people looking.

How do I join this cable?

Thanks Lucid and Sparkymarka - I was expecting to find three cores more like a red/black for the power and yellow coax with ground wrapping for the video. That's why I was a bit confused as to how to join it as it wasn't as I expected. From what Sparkymarka has said it would seem there is a...

How do I join this cable?

Thank you Lucid. There is a single core in the red (power) and a single core in the yellow (video) then both are wrapped together in the 'ground wire' with then an almost paper like sleeve before the outer black sleeve. So, in a nutshell, the second kind of cable you've described. If I...

How do I join this cable?

I don't think I've never seen them, Sam. I'm only a DIYer though so I've not done that much searching for these kind of things in the past. I'm having a browse now as they seem to sell a large variety of useful bits.

How do I join this cable?

Thanks Sam, not seen that site before, useful for all sorts It didn't come with a camera. If you read the CCTV thread correctly you'd know none of the cameras are Swann. Thanks for the useful input anyway.

    Freeview in place of Sky.

I've got EE TV; worth checking out if you're contractually at a point where you can swap internet providers. Go via topcashback or similar and you'll probably get about £100 upfront. The EE TV box has four tuners in it (I think) so you can record your favourite channels 24/7 plus pause, rewind...

How do I join this cable?

I didn't say it was a double barrelled shotgun... Either way, wrong terminology aside, it is as per the picture so advice would be appreciated. There's power and video cables on there with the coax style wrap around them.

    My £180 4CH CCTV Setup - A Review

Well we're well over two years in now and, alas, the DVR is dead! Lasted about two years before giving up on life. Replaced it with a Swann 8CH with better apps and features. Of course I still bought it b-grade from Maplin for a steal of a price. All the cameras are running perfectly 3+ years...
