Making the Best of a Stupid Mistake

Pretty well 99% of all window board generally available is MDF, and while using material as thin as 3mm isn't ideal, I have to make the best of it, or scrap an expensive custom-made blind. I'm putting quadrant bead around the inside of the window reveal to help keep it flat, and it is stuck down...

Making the Best of a Stupid Mistake

Yes, there's enough room for 3mm material, and I fitted it yesterday, together with an 18mm half-round trim on the front edge, both stuck directly to the plaster with gripfill. If it seems secure, this morning, I'll sand it over and give it a coat of primer. It looks fine.

Making the Best of a Stupid Mistake

It's a vertical blind: the drop isn't adjustable. The only things I could do with it are: a) Scrap the fabric and have it remade (reusing the rest of the parts) b) Take out the weights that slip into sewn pockets on each section, unpick the stitching, cut the fabric of each section (there...

Making the Best of a Stupid Mistake

We have a newly constructed kitchen extension, and I was going to fit an MDF window cill and then hang a vertical blind in the window. To cut a long story short, I ordered the blind, but forgot (duh!) to deduct the thickness of the intended cill from the measurements, and now there isn't room...

    Preparation for New Carpets

The price differential is pretty small, actually, and both are well within my budget. As it happens, while I have ordered the carpet & fitting services from a carpet shop, I haven't ordered the underlay and gripper yet - I'll do that tomorrow. I probably will go for Axfelt 65 in the expectation...

    Preparation for New Carpets

So I ordered the stair carpet today, from a smallish very long-established retailer with an excellent local reputation. On the subject of stair underlay they actively advised against Axfelt 65 (but was able to supply it), saying that felt underlays were ideal to bed in the stitched joins of...

    Preparation for New Carpets

Let's forget the stairs. Otherwise it was a simple question. If no one wants to answer it here, so be it.

    Preparation for New Carpets

Did I say anything about wonderful tradesmen? As for the rest, if you had a point, I missed it, sadly.

    Preparation for New Carpets

I'm not the devil incarnate, I just don't want to pay Carpet Right's prices for crappy quality underlay or cheap gripper. I've found some helpful and directly relevant information (mostly elsewhere, as it happens), and I will be saving about £350, based on Carpet Right's estimate. I'll have...

    Preparation for New Carpets

Oh dear, ANOTHER scare story. I'm not some stupid dumb blonde tart! I have never suggested buying whole rolls of carpet online, but I can work out, all by myself, that a roll of 1.3m wide underlay is perfectly manageable (except, perhaps in heels). And if I am receiving a delivery, I'll be there...

    Preparation for New Carpets

Agreed: but finding them is the challenge. But a shop that won't be open about the way it prices has something to hide. The search goes on ...

    Preparation for New Carpets

Fair enough, but I think it is beyond my budget (except, perhaps, for the stairs). The two bedrooms are guest rooms and likely to be used a few times a year, and the living room is a study/library which will not be subject to heavy use or the rough and tumble of family life. It would be nice...

    Preparation for New Carpets

I'm sure it does, given your obvious agenda: but this is a DIY forum, and I wasn't looking to be preached at, less still, read just about every 'scare 'em into the wallet of an honest tradesman' gambit going. I've been into several local shops, and every single one has recommended PU...

    Preparation for New Carpets

I'm about to purchase new carpet for a living room, two bedrooms and landing & stairs. I'm not even considering cutting & fitting the carpet myself, but I am dismayed at the price that carpet shops quote for not-very-good underlay and for incidentals like gripper & door strips. It bumps up the...

    Damp Patch on Parapet Wall

Me: so obviously I can't 'just' say "It leaks, fix it!". Would it be normal to put DPC under coping stones on a parapet wall?

    Damp Patch on Parapet Wall

We recently had an extension built that includes this newly built parapet wall which supports a lean-to conservatory roof. There is a large damp patch on the internal face of the wall, so I have so far deferred plastering while I investigate the cause and get it fixed. I...

Building a Domestic Extension in Stages

Done the latter, going to do the former today, having trimmed up the foam. When it comes to fitting the plasterboards, I read the suggestion that I should fit them with the longer side across the rafters, but given the shape of the roof, I can get more efficient use out of very expensive...
