Private Approved Inspector - South Somerset / North Dorset

Hi all, I'm trying to find a private approved inspector to assist on a 2 storey extension. Main issue I have is the 8 weeks the LABC will take to review the scheme. Just wondering whether anyone here can recommend someone who'll cover my area? Thanks

Brand new toilet not flushing enough

Old cisterns hold lots more water than modern ones and the 6 ltr limit (combined with expanding wastelines!) means that toilets have to be able to remove soil more efficiently than previously. This is done by creating a faster discharge of water into the pan from the cistern, and avoiding the...

    Non Hetas approved log burner

Hi all, Considering having a log burner installed as part of a renovation project. Problem is that the unit we are after is not hetas approved. I've been told that this fact will mean that building control will not approve the install. Is that correct?

    Schematic drawings wanted

hi all, I hope I'm not breaking any rules with this enquiry. I'm based near wincanton although I'm not sure if this could be done remotely? I'm looking for an electrical designer to help specify the following:- 1) New CU in new meter cupboard with submain to old meter location for...

can i use cylinder stat to control my immersion?

Apologies for the lack of clarity - so maybe I should have worded:- An economy 7 type meter energises immersion during off peak periods. I only need them to take the water to 50 deg. However exceptionally (when their is high DHW load) I will need them to heat the water to a higher temp and...

can i use cylinder stat to control my immersion?

That would solve my problem as stated - only I wanted to be able to overide the cylinder stat at other times and heat the water to a higher temperature (i.e. for central heating). Hence why I'm looking to try and use a cylinder stat. Is it possible to use a relay?

can i use cylinder stat to control my immersion?

Looking for a way to have a cylinder stat to liven up an immersion circuit when the water temp drops below say 50 deg. I assume I can't run a normal cylinder stat in series with the immersion due to the high current. Any advice would be appreciated!

    Bathroom Refurb/Installation Layout Advice

I used to design bathrooms for a living, and I wouldn't try and squeeze a separate shower cubical into that room - it's too small to accomodate it reasonably. I'd suggest an overbath shower.

Parking Standards - when do they apply?

I've submitted planning for a rear extention to my mid-terrace 2 bed cottage. It's a double storey extention which will make the property 3-bed. The front of the property is within 1.5m of the public highway (I've a very small front garden). A guy from the planning dept came round to take...

Clueless about Underfloor Heating - Help please!

You could fit electric UFH but the highest output units are only 200w/sqm so you'll probably be adding 800w or so to the room. Normally electric UFH is used to make the tiles bearable to walk on in the morning - so it's run with a timer. However, if your problem is lack of heating in the...

    push button cistern, losing water

You'll probably need to remove the valve to inspect the seal. If it was me I'd use a combination of brute force and bad language in that order. As to how you get that water / metal out of there, towels / a magnet / wet hoover / tweezers / fingers / drinking straw etc good luck!

    push button cistern, losing water

Check the seal on the discharge valve (the bit that you lift up to let the water into the pan) - sounds like it's leaking water into the pan. It should create a seal when it sits into the bottom of the cistern.

Does anyone know what this is called for a shower head?

Never seen an item like the one you're looking for. Why not just get a new hose and one of these to use with your existing riser rail (you'll just need to check riser rail diameter). http://www.dealclick.co.uk/product/14012860/BQ-Chrome-Shower-Head-Holder-With-Riser-Rail-Attachment.html

    Water hammer questions

We get water hammer problems whenever the garden hose is connected to the external tap, and the tap is left open (the hose is closed via a spray gun at the far end). If we close the external tap, the banging stops. I don't know why this is but I very much doubt it's anything to do with...

WB DT10 digistat Mark 2 - fault and fuming!

I can't help with the technical side of your question, but with regards to the failure of the item within 2 years, I can help clarify your rights. I'm going to assume that you bought the item from a merchant - not WB directly - in which case your contract of sale was with the merchant (you...

    thermosyphoning solid fuel circuit

Generally you're told to follow the rule that all feeds must rise and all returns must fall to encourage thermosyphoning. Is there any reason why you should deviate from this? I'm thinking if there is only a small vertical distance between the flow /return connections on the stove, isn't...

hot water tank sprung a leak, safe to use coal fire still?

I'm definitely no expert but as long as you've simply stopped the tank filling up then there's no reason why the circuit will explode, as it should still be vented (I'm assuming it is vented!). However, normally you can damage the back boiler through overheating when you light a fire whilst...

Drain valve on Solid Fuel Stove circuit

Hi, Solid fuel stove has 1 feed and 1 return. I presume that there should be a drainage valve on the return before it enters the stove, correct? I'm assuming that given the circuit has to be able to thermosyphon, that will be the lowest point? It's not fitted yet but it's a duel aspect...
