I thought that it was TNS but looking again I think that its TN-C-S.

It is surface wired. As it is a workshop I wanted to be able to easily move things around if that became necessary.

Hi John No there are no pipes etc. The only 'service' is the SWA three core buried between 600mm and 450mm (beneath a path). Live, neutral and earth, with the earth conductor and the armouring all connected to the earth point at the house end.

Ah! Of course. No all the workshop wiring is surface mounted. At the back of the workbenches, and in some other areas, it is in plastic trunking.

Roof support over a bay window

Hi We are having some work done converting our attached garage into a bedroom and shower room for our disabled son. As the work is grant aided we had to go to an architect, not a bad idea in itself, however, part of the work involves replacing the flat roof over the garage with a pitched roof...

Hi John Yes I connected the wires, switched on and everything was OK. I plugged a small lamp into one of the sockets on the ring main, it lit and seemed OK, so I pressed the test button and then bang etc. The circuit couldn't then be powered up again. I will contact TLC Thanks for your help.

Hi Yes I was a qualified electrician but as I posted that was a long time ago, I went on to do a degree etc. and I'm now an instrumentation and control systems engineer. Because my electrical installation experience was a long time ago I asked a qualified friend to check over what I was doing...

Hi I have just built a new workshop in my garden and I am wiring it up. I used to work as an electrician many years ago but I am not up to date with the current regulations. However I spoke to an electrician friend who passed my plans for the permanent installation and is going to test the...

    SWA armoured to a shed/workshop

Uhm its all very interesting. One point looking at the tables that were posted I note that for 10mm SWA XPLE the CSA of the armouring is only 26mm^2 and should be 31.09 ^2 it is therefore not compliant. The supplier, that I'm thinking of using, for the SWA says that all of his cable is XLPE...

    SWA armoured to a shed/workshop

Uhm so as I understand the posts, it is reccomended that a third core be used as an earth but it is not a regulation, at least not when using 10mm SWA. Most/many(?) electricians would still use the armouring as the earth connection. Maybe my best bet is to wait until 'my' electrician is back...

    SWA armoured to a shed/workshop

Thanks to you both for your help. Quick question, if you don't mind. I thought that I shouldn't earth the shed/workshop to the house only if there was another metal connection, i.e a water pipe, providing an earth. Is this what you mean? In the case of my installation the only outside...

    SWA armoured to a shed/workshop

Hi Many years ago I was an electrician (well ok nearly 40 years ago actually)! Now I have built a workshop in my garden, having calculated the power requirement I have decided to install 10mm SWA (I don't really need that size as 6mm would be ok, but to give some leeway.....). Now because of...
