Doesn't quite answer my question. I was wondering whether the prep is different for the different wall types (if I can categorise them into different types)

I'm painting my house at the moment, which has bare plaster on some walls (previously wallpapered) and some walls have been recently skimmed (week or so ago). Does the preparation for painting differ for recently skimmed walls and years old bare plastered walls?

New door was fitted, and appropriately varnished by the fitter. However a few years down, water is seeping in and damaging carpet. Any suggestions? I seem to think the water seeps through the panel part where the varnish has worn a little, but I have since attempted to varnish myself, but...
