    slim sockets/switches

what would you call a socket that has minimal protrusion into the box? I termed it "slim" (with inverted commas to emphasise the looseness) as I believe there is no industry standard terminolgy for this. I know that when manufacturers say slim they mean the face of the socket doens't come...

    Main supply earthing point question

Mike, It sounds like your original CU is not a TNS arrangement but more like a TT system. I would definitely contact your DNO and get them to provide you with a decent earthing point (which is their obligation). Also sounds like you don't have an RCD in between the meter and CU which is now a...

    slim sockets/switches

with a 16mm enclosure the actual depth will be 21mm because of the tiled surface (extra 5-6mm) I am aware you need 25mm with most fitments but if "slim" (minimal protrusion into the enclosure) sockets are available then a 21mm total distance may be enough. The customer wants a slim...

    slim sockets/switches

thanks for the replies. andrew, in reply to your question. the customer wants me to cut the minimum depth into the wall for the enclosure. The actual surface is tiled so that adds around another 5-6mm. I did try to convice them to use a 25mm enclosure but we shall see how it goes.

    slim sockets/switches

are the rear projections on all switches the same? I am trying to get hold of some sockets/switches that don't protrude into the mounting box too much so I can get away with a 16mm metal enclosure. anyone got any ideas? thanks in advance

Is separate switch required for a cooker hood?

I doubt that the b and q fitters would even get prosecuted. The policing in this country is non-existant and the authorities aren't going to come out because someone put a switch in a cupboard as opposed to above the work surface. Although you have good grounds to negotiate a discount. Half...

    Plastering after rewiring

I have found that if you use metal capping then the plaster tends to crack from the thermal expansion, even if you have 5mm of plaster on top after a few years it cracks. I think the best thing to do is to use PVC conduit and then use no more nails to glue the conduit down. that way it...

    Electric shower question

at 8500W, you are pulling 37A + losses through the cable so a 40A MCB / fuse should be okay. at 9.5kW you will be pulling 41.3A + losses through the cable so you will need a 50A. Just for your information, you can work out the amp rating using this formula Power = Current x Volts...

Consumer Unit to Supply final connection - who do I talk to?

A colleague of mine is currently in the same debacle as you. The supply (billing) is done by Npower but the DNO is what was Yorkshire Electricity (YEDL). YEDL are passing the buck over to Npower and Npower are passing it back. I have not seen this type of problem where the customer's...

    Mains or lighting ring?? ?

The lighting circuit is not usually a ring. it usually terminates at the last ceiling rose or junction box. Usually the lighting circuit is protected by a 6A MCB so that equates to about 1380W (although you should take some off that for losses) Provided you do not exceed the rated output...
