Just to close this thread, I did eventually resolve this problem. As a last resort I planned to repeat the power flush (from the pump location) and at the same time fit a new central heating pump. However, it seemed sensible to replace the pump first, since it was the lower cost of the two...

Ok, I believe it's fixed. The problem was eventually tracked down to a broken overheat thermostat. It's probable that when the boiler was turned on during the flushing process, it wasn't adequately filled and triggered the cutout. I assume this is why it burned in 15 second bursts. However...
