    Squealing tap

Thanks Rob, No it's the bottom one. And this sounds like a job for a plumber. The valve is definitely jammed and obviously the tap is worn. I'm surprised at both - they were new 2 or 3 years ago, but hey ho. I'll buy a new tap and get a professional in to fit it. Thank you both for your advice.

    Squealing tap

Thanks both. Andy - I will if necessary. The old one isn't very old and I'll have to get a plumber in but that may be the best solution, given my level of incompetence with DiY. I can build a computer, but I don't trust myself to change a tap. I was hoping it might be just a washer... Rob -...

    Squealing tap

I have a problem in that our kitchen sink mixer tap drips when off and and makes a horrible screeching noise when turned on - cold tap only. I assumed it was the washer. When the mixer tap was fitted, I had an inline valve fitted so that in future I would be able to isolate it in situations...

    Mixer tap washer replacement

I have a similar problem in that our kitchen sink cold tap drips and makes a horrible screeching noise when turned on. I assumed it needed a new washer. Now Polesapart's reply is making me wonder. What even is a quarter-turn ceramic disc tap spindle? Also, when the mixer tap was fitted, I had...

    Problem emptying the bath

John, thank you very much! There is indeed a screw in the plug itself. Five seconds with a screwdriver and job done. Again, thank you... M

    Problem emptying the bath

Hello all, Our bath has one of those 'remote control' plugs where you turn a knob on the side of the bath to open or close the plug. The mechanism has been getting less and less effective - ie the plug hardly moves and needs to be physically removed in order to drain the bath. Now it's so...

    Replacing a built-in fridge

Thanks for your help folks. I came back to mark this thread as solved, but I can't see how to do that. Anyway, I haven't replaced the fridge yet, but I will do when I get round to it. Meanwhile, it's just turned off and we're relying on the freestanding one - thanks jj4091 for the positive...

    Replacing a built-in fridge

Thanks again. It appears that whoever designed our kitchen was an idiot. The fridge is located next to the oven which probably explains the failing door seal and the rapid icing-up. All I can do is replace and hope the next one lasts a while before going the same way. On top of that, the only...

    Replacing a built-in fridge

Thanks jj, Are these things all standard size? Can I replace with any brand? And is it just a case of unscrewing brackets and attaching new ones? (I'm the 'not' in diynot...).

    Replacing a built-in fridge

Hello Folks, We have a built-in fridge which has developed two problems. Firstly, it frosts up very quickly. Secondly, the door has dropped and now fails to close properly. So, time to replace it. Thing is, I don't know how old it is - it came with the house which we bought four years ago, and...

    Hideous noise when running water..

Thanks for that securespark, I thought the quote sounded ok, but I've only had the one quote - local plumbers must be pretty busy. I think I'll just go with it. It's a firm I've used before and I'm confident about their professionalism, so no point scrabbling about trying to save £100. Yes...

    Hideous noise when running water..

Can I ask for any educated opinions please? Does £800 sound to be in the right ball-park for 5-6 new radiators, flushing the system, replacing the ball valve in the loft?

    Hideous noise when running water..

Before I close this thread, I have a couple more questions if anyone can help.. Firstly, the hot water (and the heating) seem to have stopped functioning. The boiler works, but only fires up for a minute or so, even though the system should be calling for hot water (or heat). I'm waiting for a...

    Hideous noise when running water..

You're very welcome. My own attitude to any qualified tradesman is respect. I don't know why I even contemplated messing about with the plumbing. Normally I wouldn't tackle water or electrics. I suppose it just sounded deceptively easy. That changed when I discovered our broken radiator had a...

    Hideous noise when running water..

Hello folks, Thank you all for your help. However I've decided to go for the wrinkly old plumber option. Maybe the professionals here just happen to have a valid point.. Why? Because yesterday evening one of our radiators decided to burst open (corrosion). The inlet valve turned out to be...

Removing the handle from a toilet cistern

I know this is solvable with a hacksaw, but I'm just wondering whether there's another way to remove the handle when the lifter is impossibly jammed onto the square metal rod and just won't budge..

    Hideous noise when running water..

Thanks both. I'll have a go soon and report back. Quite nice to know I'm not showering in a solution of decomposed pigeon..

    Hideous noise when running water..

I'm uploading 2 pictures - I hope that's ok. Some forums don't like it... Not sure how to remove the lid with that pipe sticking down into it. The vent thingy is the white thing on the right. Sorry about my terminology/ignorance.

    Hideous noise when running water..

Thanks Terry, Do I just remove the lid and it's like an old-fashioned loft tank? What about the vent/thingy on top? is it attached to anything inside?

    Hideous noise when running water..

Hello folks, Sorry for not getting back sooner. I stopped worrying so much after your replies and the plumbing noise slipped down the to-do list a bit.. However, I have now investigated further and the big tank is unlike one I've ever seen before. It's round, plastic and has a fitted lid with...
