Before you do anything drastic, where is the stopcock leaking from? Have tried tightening the gland nut?

It's leaking slightly from behind the gland nut, if I shut it off the leak stops. Can I tighten the nut while holding the handle or are they joined together? Or do I have to replace the whole thing? Cheers
