a question about council tax on empty properties and how to avoid it...

First thing is some Councils allow you 6 months zero council tax, others 6 months 50% off etc. I believe it's up to individual councils to set their empty property council tax policy. One other think to think about is insurance for a vacant building. You might find you need specialist insurance!!!

    UPVC windows advice needed

Give your local council building control department a call. Ask for their advice. If you get a helpful person they might even offer to pop round and take a look. As far as I am aware windows installations have to be certified and registered with the Council. Most installers self certify but the...

Best way to remove internal concrete render: wife vs husband

Just read your thread. I am no plasterer but have found some great advice here. I am sure you are aware that technically if you are refurbishing the wall it should comply with todays building regs. I believe that you should be aiming to achieve a U value less than 0.3 for the wall. Only...

Patch repair internal Victorian plastered brick walls

Gave it a coat of bonding then 2 coats of multi. It's not going to win any prizes but I am pleased with my first attempt. So thanks very much for all the helpful posts here.

Making good side walls after knocking wall down..

If you don't want to see where the walls were I would get a plasterer to fill in deep 'holes' then skim whole wall. The finished walls will look so much better than trying to blend the patch.

Ceiling Cracks On Lath And Plaster

I would ask your plasterers advice as it's him who will be skimming it and have his reputation to protect. My bet (I'm not a plasterer) is he will suggest overboarding and then skimming. Good Luck

Patch repair internal Victorian plastered brick walls

Looks like my impatience didn't pay off  Don't know what I did wrong but the second coat of sand & cement did not stick!! After almost 24 hrs I went to knock off the ridges of the scratches and it was not dry and just scraped off completely! So I decided to remove all the second coat...

Patch repair internal Victorian plastered brick walls

Cheers. As I was impatient I gave it another coat of sand & cement. So I only have about 2 mm left for the multi finish. Fingers crossed that will be OK. Thanks.

    quick question

I am new to plastering but I was always under the impression that plasterboard needed to be firmly fixed on all sides. Don't know if it's photos but why do you want the angle? Looking at it, would it not be better to remove the window architrave before the plasterer does the making good. That...

Patch repair internal Victorian plastered brick walls

I have done the sand cement and it is nearly dry. I am intending to PVA it and when tacky try giving it 2 coats of multi finish. I did have a bit of difficulty getting the render on thick enough next to the window frame and in some places it is 11mm from the face of the wall. So will I be...

repairing a kitchen ceiling (plasterboard) some help please

As someone who is looking for a house that requires a some work, I would say plasterboard it and tape/fill the joints, and paint to match ceiling and leave it at that. This of course provided you have fixed the problem that caused the damage. My reasoning for a repair is that it looks so much...

    Opinion on exterior cracks

I am no expert but if there are cracks there are ways for water to penetrate and then freeze! On the one hand I would get them filled but on the other getting a colour/texture match will be difficult. You have paid for an engineers report so maybe best to take his advice, as long as you have...

Patch repair internal Victorian plastered brick walls

Had a search and not found an exact answer so thought I would ask. I have an old Victorian house and on the internal face of an external exposed wall the wall paper was bulging and it felt like the plaster was crumbling. Wallpaper came of VERY easily, a bit too easily. The wall has been...
