Did they used to chase gas pipes into solid (party) walls in the '60s?

Cheers for that. I'll take it on board. Enlightening.

Thanks for the helpful reply though Nige. Good to know somebody knows what they're talking about.

Did they used to chase gas pipes into solid (party) walls in the '60s?

The reason I asked, smartarse, was as previously in my front garden, a leaking drain had caused the gas mains pipe leading up to the house to become eroded and over time it started leaking from underground. I thought I used to get a whiff but thought it must be the bins. When I called the NG...

Did they used to chase gas pipes into solid (party) walls in the '60s?

Cheers Nige. That's what I expected. You just never know when things might have been altered/DIY'd. I'm presuming if someone was, for instance, putting a gas fire into an existing fireplace in a Victorian or Edwardian gaff, they would run the gas pipe under the fooorboards to joists or whatever...

Did they used to chase gas pipes into solid (party) walls in the '60s?

I have but I can't see one. It's not going to be under the plaster is it?

Did they used to chase gas pipes into solid (party) walls in the '60s?

Back to the original question - has anybody had any experience of gas pipes being placed running horizontally in a (party) wall? Surely they would have been buried in the concrete floor with correct protection? There are no gas pipes running along the front of the property coming through the...

Did they used to chase gas pipes into solid (party) walls in the '60s?

My only other observation was the construction materials of the wall - this is a 1966 built party wall. Looks unusual to me...No cracks or other issues throughout the house.

Did they used to chase gas pipes into solid (party) walls in the '60s?

So, tonight I took a bit of the plaster away. This is looking down. You can see the skirting at the bottom. No smell of any gas - just very musty and damp smelling. It does not make the room smell damp though and never has - just this localised area. At no other area of the wall does it seem...

Did they used to chase gas pipes into solid (party) walls in the '60s?

Thanks for the reply Tony. It's a party wall, so next door's kitchen. Have you ever heard of gas pipes chased into party walls though Tony?

Did they used to chase gas pipes into solid (party) walls in the '60s?

Afternoon all. Hope I'm posting this in the correct place. When I moved into my gaff (mid terrace, built 1966) in 2009 I noticed that the paster looked shot at the bottom of a wall next to the chimney breast, and was coming away a bit. (See pic below) I didn't think too much of it, thought I'd...

    Remove of chimney stack

I've checked with other neighbours who have lived in the houses since the were built in '66 and none of the chimney breasts go down to floor level. As I said, they were originally used as to vent some sort of boiler or heater or something (I don't know exactly as they have all been removed...

    Remove of chimney stack

So I popped into the old lady's gaff next door to have a look at her chimney stack (house originally identical to mine) and in her kitchen it is as it was built in 1966. The base of the stack is tied into two walls at 90 degrees, hers starts about 4 feet from ground level as there originally...
