    GRP Roofing Problems Fixed (maybe)

How did they repair? Did they sand the topcoat back to the first layer and then apply a new layer of topcoat, or just stick some more topcoat over the existing pinholes? The Topcoat in these pictures look like it’s flaking, what evidence do you have that it’s lifted or de-laminated?

Don’t use Acrylic, it won’t last!

help please is this new GRP roof a good or bad job? If bad is it fixable?

See if the contractor offers a guarantee for the workmanship, the 20+ year manufacturers guarantee tends to only cover the materials in the event that the system is faulty and won’t include any further installation costs.

help please is this new GRP roof a good or bad job? If bad is it fixable?

So this could be just muck then. Need better photos to see what it is, but if they did it in one day then there's no chance that they would have put the topcoat down on a dewy surface the next morning and if the sun was shining and it didn't rain then there's no chance of water getting in...

help please is this new GRP roof a good or bad job? If bad is it fixable?

Need higher resolution photos to see what you’re seeing. When they installed the roof did it rain or was it low temperature ie below 5? Catalyst is a clear liquid and as this is the topcoat layer they would/should have mixed it in small portions so if it wasn’t mixed properly it wouldn’t have...

    Overcoat flat roofing system

If you were doing it with GRP then you would need to sand off to the first layer of base resin aka the white stuff, but with Overcoat I would sand back the flaky areas (Wear a mask!!) and make sure the roof is clean and dry before applying the system.

    Overcoat flat roofing system

On the first image it looks like you can see a dark grey topcoat between the new layer of topcoat, and if there's another layer on top of the existing one it might explain why it's cracked. The cheapest option would be to sand it back and patch with GRP. I've used Overcoat in the past on metal...

Leaks through our GRP flat roof

Holy pinholes batman!! No wonder you have leaks. Need to recover with topcoat or overcoating system.

GRP roof topcoat wet and coming off at the touch

Well you definitely, definitely don’t do that. You need to make topcoat up in batches, having an exact qty of catalyst going into an exact amount of topcoat for it to cure correctly. This might explain why you have patches of liquid topcoat on the roof. Drag your builder back by the nostrils...

GRP roof topcoat wet and coming off at the touch

if the topcoat has been on the roof for nearly a week and it hasn’t cured then that’s definitely not right and your builder needs to come back and fix the issue despite him saying it’s not leaking. He would need to remove the uncured areas, abrade the area, acetone wash and reapply onto a dry...

    GRP flat roof repair options

Don't use Acropol, it's not a long-term solution, only really used for emergency patch repairs. Felt and EPDM would fix the problem but it's an expensive solution. The cheapest option as you have said in your post would be to either locate the areas (pinholes) on the roof where it's leaking and...

When you say patched up the first time, what did they use? More GRP or some other product?

    Grp pooling and flaking

Hi, If you called Restec they would tell you that just applying a new layer of topcoat onto their system wouldn't work and they do not recommend it. Flexitec uses the same resin system for both base resin and topcoat but it's a hybrid polyester resin and not the same as a traditional GRP...

    Flat roof leaking

You need someone to go up and have a look, call some local roofers in the area to get on the roof they will tell you more then we can looking at a few photos other than it does not look good.

    Grp pooling and flaking

Yes, so they will say another Topcoat won't stick to their existing Flexitec product and the only way to fix it is to buy the system again. It's a polyester system so a topcoat should stick but Flexitec does not recommend it with or without the Warranty. An overlay system is a liquid roofing...

    Grp pooling and flaking

There are loads of products out there that will go over anything, Triflex caters for more industrial/commercial projects and you can't just pick up one of their products without jumping through various hoops.

    Grp pooling and flaking

Ahh bugger it's Flexitec!!, I missed that in your original post. This system is a bit of a bitch to fix in that instead of just being able to sand it down and re-apply a layer of topcoat, the resin and topcoat are the same product so the company will say that you'll need to re-apply the full...

    Grp pooling and flaking

Thanks for the pics, It could be at the time when the roof was installed that they either applied the topcoat too thick or the main laminate was not sufficiently cured. For roofs like this where the cracking is not contained to just one area we would use a flexible overlay system like the...

    Grp pooling and flaking

Without pictures it’s hard to see why the topcoat is flaking or cracking, water and pooling on a GRP Roof should not be an issue. The same resins and topcoats (albeit slightly adapted) have been used to make boats for years so issues like this should be ok. OSB over the roof and recoat, it’s an...
