    Is this newel support wrong?!

Hi everyone, Some advice please! My builder has installed my staircase like this but it appears the newel post isn't notched and seated on the trimmer joist so I don't know what he has done. The other strimmer is screwed into the wall but this side is free standing

Wrong grade threaded bar used for wall plate

Thanks for this.. it suggests 1.09 for perpendicular load long term with 45mm member thickness using the 4.6 grade. I used 4.8 grade which is abit stronger so I would like to think the load capacity is higher than this so I should be fine as we used plenty extra studs. Thanks for all the help!

Wrong grade threaded bar used for wall plate

If M12 threaded bar has a surface area of 113mm and it is grade 4.8 so 400nm per mm2 then does that mean each bar can handle 113*400 nm?

Wrong grade threaded bar used for wall plate

Sorry I should have said - we used M12 threaded bar which is graded 4.8 (and I have understood this to mean it can handle 400n/mm2 and yield at 80% of that stress) with maximum 400mm centres. The wall here is a random rough cut stone wall so we had to find best places to resin the studs into...

Wrong grade threaded bar used for wall plate

Thanks for replying, I'm waiting to speak to my structural engineer and in the meantime I spoke to Fischer who told me the resin is tested with grade 5.8 and that has 500nm capacity whereas 4.8 has 400nm capacity and the .8 at the end means they will yield at 80% of that capacity. We did space...

Wrong grade threaded bar used for wall plate

Hi can you help me with a problem please! We have just realised we used standard grade 4.8 threaded bar for resin anchor fixings a wall plate to support a new suspended timber floor when we needed a minimum of grade 5.8 threaded bar:/ The old studs have to stay in place now and we have some...

    Ledger board in two pieces

Hi all, Can you give some advice please. I have installed a ledger board as two separate pieces of timber (8*2) to carry new floor joists on hangers. I have simply butted the two ledger boards together as they have m12 resin anchor bolts through out at 400mm centres. Someone mentioned that...

How to remove a stuck wall hung toilet pan?

Sorry I forgot to get back you, thanks for the input! Btw I was also thinking of taking a hammer to it lol. The wall hung pan won't slide off.. I do think the plumber may have added some adhesive to the pipes or the bolts when he put the pan on as it really will not budge. So I did my best to...

How to remove a stuck wall hung toilet pan?

Hi, Can anyone please offer some advice on how I can remove a wall hung toilet pan? I have undone the Allen bolts and cut through all the adhesive around the perimeter of the bowl so it should simply slide off the pins now but it remains stuck. I suspect it is being held in place by the water...

Guidance on how to support chimney stack pls

Thanks for your input, I am hoping to get scaffolding for the full house in spring to add a flat roof dormer to the rear and at that point I intend to remove the stack as well. Currently I wanted to remove as many bricks internally as possible so I can make some progress on the internal work...

Guidance on how to support chimney stack pls

Don't know if this photo is clear enough, it shows there is only 1 brick course and behind it is the chimney cavity. In the centre you can see the half bricks.. these are running the other way into the protruding chimney stack supporting walls so I guess these are supporting the course of facing...

Guidance on how to support chimney stack pls

Yep that drawing shows it clearly. My problem is that the stack isn't deep enough at the point where I want to support it because the chimney breast slims into the gable wall. It looks like it is only 225mm so one brick length away from the wall. But I think I understand what you mean now. As...

Guidance on how to support chimney stack pls

Thanks for the advice! Yes the oak purlins either side of the chimney breast go into the gable end wall. The space between them is approx 1600mm. I had been thinking of a similar principle to what you have used before. I was thinking of getting 225mm joist and running it against the chimney...

Guidance on how to support chimney stack pls

Hi, I am trying to remove my chimney from ceiling level in the loft down to the ground floor. I'm not sure how best to support the stack so I can remove the breast. Would I use acro props to hold the bricks while I install steel gallows and lintel? Will a timber lintel do it? As there are...

Hi, I wanted to thank you for your advice on my subfloor install. I have submitted the building notice now and just needed some advice with BC. Should I call BC and mention I will be using M12 sleeve anchors at 600mm staggered to bolt the timber wall plate and ask them if they approve it? Ady

Advice required on new subfloor install pls

Hey noseall and woody, I have attached two sets of photos. First set are the single leaf brick partition wall and it has a wooden lintel not concrete as I thought. So I can either attach a wall plate to the bricks just above the lintel or I can sit then onto the bricks and directly above the...
