    Opening Up Chimney Breast

The threads I've come across don't answer the questions I asked. If you can find an example of one that would be useful and many of the thread related to opening up chimney breasts aren't answered, most seem to be relating to lintels and forming openings, which wasn't my question. I'm not...

Getting old oak framed walls insulated

I'll see if I can work it out for you. I wouldn't think you'd need to worry about it not breathing in a 300 year old house.

Getting old oak framed walls insulated

I'd go for it. Like I said previously the only way to improve it further would be to substitute the steico flex for a PIR board (which has twice the thermal resistance - a 50mm Celotex CG5000 PIR board has 2.35 vs your 1.55 for a 60mm thick wood fibre batt.

    Opening Up Chimney Breast

Found this thread and what the OP describes is similar to what I've found. //www.diynot.com/diy/threads/opening-up-a-fireplace.157681/

Getting old oak framed walls insulated

Can't think of anything other than using PIR board instead of the wood fibre batts inbetween the Oak frames.

Getting old oak framed walls insulated

0.44 does seem very low using a TLX system. I see. 0.44 seems a very low-u-value with the use of TLX, so maybe check the calcs again. Don't forget when you install TLX it needs to have an air gap either side to work (i.e you can't compact it), so your best bet is using battens on the Oak...

Getting old oak framed walls insulated

Have you got scope to form another timber frame on the outside that you could insulate, then counter-batten to fix the tiles, or does the wall need to remain the same thickness?

    Opening Up Chimney Breast

I've been researching and all the threads on here didn't seem to be answered, there isn't really any "how - to's" so have just asked on here. I want to expose the brickwork as I like that. Hoping to achieve something similar to this. Here's where I'm up to so far.... I've carefully...

    Opening Up Chimney Breast

Hi Guys, Looking to open up the chimney breast in my house. Its a 1900 victorian terrace house and I want to open up the chimney in the living room and install an open fire basket, possibly further down the line opt for a log burner. Obviously there will have been a fire in there at some...

Cellar Floor - Gravel & Slabs

Making a start on this soon, so about to order the DPM. How far up the walls would you recommend lapping the DPM? Obviously there isn't a DPC in the walls in the cellar, so guessing just above the finish floor would suffice?!

    What's this fitting called

Thanks for this - did exactly as you said and all sorted no leaks at all. I didn't use a single check valve though (don't know what this is) just the washing machine valve which allows me to turn it on and off still. The previous owner of the house was definitely a bit of a bodger.....wonder...

    What's this fitting called

I thought it looked a bit strange, it's the outside tap and it is a bodge the hole around the pipe has been stuffed with an old tesco bag! Cheers

Can anyone tell me what the above is called? The tap on it has broken so I need to replace it. Thanks Ben

    Best flooring option?

Cheers John - definitely going to look into these, maybe a tad on the expensive side but look very easy to lay yourself.

    Best flooring option?

Just looking at this now. Roughly how thick are the planks? I'd ideally like to lay a new floor without having to pull up the old tiles and level.... Cheers Ben

Cellar Floor - Gravel & Slabs

Awesome, thanks for the advice. Sounds straight forward enough and I'm glad I asked now. Good news about the bricks I've got a pile of them in the outhouse sitting there doing nothing too.

Cellar Floor - Gravel & Slabs

OK thanks for your advice - much appreciated. You're certainly the first person to refer to the cellar floor as gorgeous! They are blue bricks - you can't really tell on the cellar floor but thats what the stairs on the way down to it are constructed from A timber floor would be easiest for me...

Cellar Floor - Gravel & Slabs

I honestly can't see these bricks adding much in the way of value. The cellar is 3.2m x 3.9 meters with a loadbearing block wall underneath the hall way wall. The is maybe 50mm deviation in the surface. Few photo's so you can see what I'm dealing with: The biggest dip is by the saw but is...

Cellar Floor - Gravel & Slabs

Yes good points - this is why I asked. I spoke to a friend last night who did his cellar. He dug out the bricks, put down a DPM, 25mm PIR insulation and then slabbed on top of it. I don't want the hassle of digging out the bricks and don't need the head room so what about I level with sand or...
