If you use too wide a trowel and wet mix it'll spread on to the face of the bricks which will stain them. When pointing with lime you need to keep working it to keep it lively

If you have the right mix, tools and technique that's a 3-4 hour job, I can tell from the look you have quite a wet mix.

Yes, as you hit it with the brush it grinds the surface down so you only tap it lightly . I don't know the finish your after but old lime pointing has little course bits in it and tapping exposes them on the surface. I don't know your location but traditional building material suppliers selling...

Mortar gun needs wet mix to go through so as it lime will tend to get shrinkage cracks as it dries. I would use a course drier mix with a narrow finger towel and beat it back with a stiff brush before it gone off too much

For shorter dead accurate internal measuring you won't beat a Hultafors Talmeter tape measure
