Dash Cam recommendation

That is actually not legal and a MOT failure.
Honestly, it’s not. You don’t have to consider things that obstruct your view of the sky or the bonnet and in any case, the tester is allowed to remove dash cameras prior to the test.

I’m looking to get a dash cam for our new car. Just looking for a single one that can be hard wired and comes on automatically when I start up. Not looking for a 2 ch setup - if they hit me in the rear it’s their fault anyway. Also not particularly looking for one that records when parked. Not bothered either whether it has a screen on it - but must have one that has WiFi so events can be viewed and stored on a mobile phone so one with an easy to use app. Anyone on here using such a setup? Recommendations?
Get one that uses capacitors instead of conventional batteries

I've had the Xiaomi 70 Mai in both my cars for several years and never failed.
They're small enough to fit behind the rearview mirror and images is good.
Also app is very easy to use.
Only gripe is that they're designed for European market, so the function button is on the left side.
Said that, I never touched that button, but I would prefer to see the reassuring green light from the driver's seat.
They're very good value for money.

Late to the party, but I have Blackvues in all of my cars. Mostly front and rear too.

Excellent camera - set and forget, and discreet with no unsightly screen.

That’s what I am thinking of getting as I’m not keen on a screen on the camera but I keep reading that the app is terrible. How are you finding the app?

The app is fine for what it is. You hardly use it to be honest, just once in a blue moon to download a video. It’s easy enough to use and does what you need.

I don't have a rear view mirror due to having solid rear doors, in it's place I have a 6" x 3" screen that shows the rear view for parking. It is on as soon as I start the engine. and yes it past it's mot last week.

set the screen to switch off after 1 minute - the screen is good as it shows it is working, and displays a message if there is a fault - such as 'no memory card' I often forget to put it back in after reviewing something.

I’ve got a Viofo A119 Mini in my car and it’s been spot on for what I need. I hardwired it so it comes on with the ignition, and I like that I don’t have to mess with a screen since everything’s easy enough to check on the app. The WiFi connects pretty quick when I want to grab a clip, and the video quality has been clear even at night or in bad weather, which was a big deal for me since I drive a lot on unlit roads.

Fitted an Anker Roav C1 five years ago to my Ioniq. Very happy with it.

  • Wiring was straight forward...
  • The rubber door seal was the most difficult part as it needs plying back with the supplied crowbar but it eventually went it. I almost routed the cable under the glove box but like the OP I lifted the carpet just behind the pedals. I was concerned about how it routed to the centre console but using the crowbar, I was able to open up the gap enough to push the cable into the gap so my fears were unfounded
  • I mounted mine a couple of mm to the side of the sensor so it is invisible when driving. Had I done it again I would have left about a cm gap because at the very top corner I can just see the black screen webbing. No big deal though.
  • Settings need to be adjusted as mine kept recording when not in use filling the SD card with locked videos and also running down the internal battery.
  • So have set parking mode OFF and sensitivity to low. No problems now.
  • Bought a fake Sandisk off Ebay. Money refunded and new 128Gb Ultra 100x from Amazon is fine.
  • The C1 has been replaced with a newer model S1 but happy with my choice for less than £80.
  • Videos are downloadable via a Wifi connection and app but it is a bit fiddly to set up so I tend to remove the CAM and then the SDcard and view them on my PC.
