    As soon as you turn the CB for that circuit on, the RCD trips out. There is nothing on the ring main at all !

    It’s sparking behind the front plate. It looks as though it’s where the earth is connected. Could it be because there isn’t a tight earth connection ?

    Why would a double power socket start to spark? There is no load on the socket. The wiring is very old and has no earthing so have earthed the socket plate to the metal back box. Have checked connection for both L and N and seem to be ok. Any ideas please.

    Can I connect another cable to the new PIR sensor for a switch? eg: wire at sensor and connect to switch?

    I have tried connecting a similar IP rated switch. Its hard to know what is neutral - switched live etc as cant see other end of cables. I know blows at CU aren't good but this is really frustrating me. I don't own a multimeter - yet. Not sure which wires to go where with a neon switch...

    I tried most combinations with a few blows from the consumer unit. brown to com and either black or grey to L1 didn't blow but I couldn't get the lights working! I obviously cannot see how original wires have been connected as out of reach. So frustrating but thanks for help so far....
