    "Back to top" button

If you press the clock (or anywhere on the status bar) on iOS, the browser will scroll to the top. The same applies in lots of apps.

    Full house build.

That isn't surprising around here, I'm afraid. There are a number of "experts" who like to find ways criticise everything they see on here. I'm not entirely sure why they visit so frequently if only to be unhelpfully negative at every turn. I suppose there's always a risk that someone might be...

    Faulty cylinder stat?

Our cyclinder stat has a permanent live. It automatically heats the water up to 60°c once a week regardless of any input from my nest. Also, our frost stat is connected to our HW so when it drops below 10°c in the garage (where the boiler is), the HW will be heated. Last week ours was coming on...

    Missing Logo

The logo in the top right of the site appears to have gone AWOL. It links to //i.diynot.com/diynot.png which is just a 404.

    Recently qualified

John - don't stoop to their levels and entertain their needless questioning of your ability. It's a shame but many of the experienced plumbers on here are bitter and twisted about one thing or another. Not to mention being against anyone who might be able to do the same job as them. Congrats on...

Help me with the simple clear understanding of the following

Is there any harm in him asking here? There's nothing wrong with asking questions about these things and people should be encouraged to research things and ask questions outside of the classroom as well as inside it.

Help me with the simple clear understanding of the following

The C&G textbooks are pretty good but includes a lot more information than just wiring regs but do cover everything you've asked about those tests. https://www.amazon.co.uk/City-Guilds-Textbook-Electrical-Installations/dp/0851932835/

    Timing

Nobody uses their heating in the summer. You don't want to invest in new stuff and then have no opportunity to use it for another 6 months.

Would you buy a used hospital bed for your home?

No and hell no! Seriously though, no! I'm amazed you have to ask.

    Hive replacing a Honeywell timer

I speak from a purely cosmetic stand point. Compared with every alternative Nest, Tado, Evohome and even normal room stats, it looks like it was cobbled together by a blind elephant with a heavy cold.

    Hive replacing a Honeywell timer

Either way, you'll end up with a Hive. A truly hideous piece of technology.

    Bathroom downlights have no earth?

Without any earth on these things, the OP needs to be careful not to get seriously electrocuted!

Wireless thermostat installation: hot water on but no heating

Just because he was a part P qualified electrician, it doesn't mean he knows anything about wiring up heating systems. Sounds likely he didn't! Glad it's all fixed :)

    Anyone fitted esi esctde

The install manual is pretty simple. It needs a permanent live (to manage the weekly boost, I assume) plus a common (from programmer) and NO connection (to the valve). What are you confused about?

    Hive, Nest, LightwaveRF, which?

I believe these units only store the current target temperature. If wifi was to drop and/or the service was to disappear, it will stay on the last selected target temperature and wouldn't update based on any schedule you configure. Not ideal.

    Hive, Nest, LightwaveRF, which?

I think that means the backend service hasn't heard from the TRV recently. You might want to make sure it has a good connection to the hub. Try moving the hub closer to the radiator and see if that helps. If not, you can try deleting it and repairing it through the web interface.

    Recessed lights

I was under the impression these were going along the edge of a lawn and a flower bed or something. It looks like a new build all circuits could well be protected by a couple of RCDs anyway.

    Recessed lights

What about some solar ones? They won't be as good but should be quite a bit cheaper. http://www.thesolarcentre.co.uk/products/Set_Of_4_Solar_Round_Decking_Lights-560-101.html
