    Plaster to Tile Board transition

So, I'm down to the coke block on the whole length of wall, which is pretty square and level. Which should I fix first, the plaster base coat\board or the tile backer? How do I get the depths levels correct between the two surfaces for tiling(which I will do) and skimming by the plasterer...

    Plaster to Tile Board transition

How can I transition between a tiled wall and a base coated\skimmed wall? The situation is typical I would imagine, tiles on the wall behind the kitchen worktop up to the wall cupboards, then plaster for the remaining distance up to the ceiling. The existing plaster is all going to have to...

MCB size for reference method? & Mini Kitchen Consumer Unit

Thanks for your continued efforts EFL, very useful pointers! I'm going to have to do some more reading! I've been toying with the idea of hiring a loop\insulation tester, or picking one up and then reselling it, but then I'd also need a calibrated screwdriver also Maybe also a RCD tester. The...

Depth of Cable chases\backboxes in Chimney bricks and joist support pillar.

Good point! If I can put the backbox near the edge (one brick depth) it could avoid the direct heat from any future burner, as the bricks behind will be thicker, being part of the wall of the chimney, rather than facing onto the flue. Thinking about it, if I put it up high, behind the TV...

What about a phase to neutral mechanical fault? is that just presumed to be unlikely? Is the fault protection related to the infamous adiabatic equation? I was trying to punch the numbers on that one to check the mini kitchen consumer unit fault tolerance. (12m 10mmT&E on 40A mcb 80A 30ms RCCB...

Yes, there is already a I've been reading dozens of horror stories of vendors held over a barrel with electrical inspection failures for work that doesn't need actually need doing, but the electrician knows that the vendor will pay for the work to prevent the hold up of the sale. I'm not...

Depth of Cable chases\backboxes in Chimney bricks and joist support pillar.

Yikes, isn't that against the laws of physics!?! It seems walls are have more redundancy than I imagined! chasing the cables into the brick should make the wall easier to board and plaster in the future when we get round to doing the whole kitchen, so thanks for your help. Hopefully the old...

Depth of Cable chases\backboxes in Chimney bricks and joist support pillar.

Thanks EFLImpudence, it is going to look a lot better now than a surface mounted! Now where is (my Dad's) scutch chisel! Hopefully the coax and cat cable will fit in the smallest of holes through the mortar joint that can be back filled and less risk of splitting the brick, I might have a...

I just checked, it is a 45A MK socket and isolator isn't the fuse also there to protect the cable and accessories against short circuit? Would it be coded on an inspection?

Another thing I noticed is that the 10mm cable goes through the backbox(45mm, looks like plenty of space in there) of one the ring main sockets. It has its insulation on and must have been done as space is tight to run the cables down, but is this normal practice? e.g. 2 cables from different...

Depth of Cable chases\backboxes in Chimney bricks and joist support pillar.

Hi Folks, I'd like to add a backbox for a network cable and coax for a TV attached to the chimney (rear of the chimney in the kitchen, there is no fire place on either side). The chimney also holds up a steel support for the upstairs joists. Are there special limits that apply to the depth of...

Out of interest I had a look at the other 10mm circuit and oven installation instructions. Surprise surprise, the only guidance of fuse size was for a "suitably rated fuse or circuit breaker". It did specify at least 6mm T&E cable, no mention of flex form the outlet, luckily it is connected to...

Sorry for the absence folks, hard drive crash doom has led to a week of internet detox! I take your point on board Risteard and the inspection is something I will eventually pay to have done, but in my mind at least, it is a thing to avoid problems at a future sale of the house(hopefully I'm...

MCB size for reference method? & Mini Kitchen Consumer Unit

Nope, the 10mm feeds the mini consumer unit, and the cooker(hob) control unit (and socket) is supplied from a 32A MCB in the mini consumer unit, alongside the two 20A MCBs for the 2 single sockets. I guess this allows the hob to have its own mcb, as might be dictated by the appliance...

Thank you for your quick reply flameport! I'm very grateful! Good to hear with regard to the conduit, being a bit of a geek, I'm probably over thinking and over reading it! It isn't easy to see what has been done practically in other friends houses with regard to conduit in the walls. The...

First post after getting my first house. So, I've traced the cables round and read up on the regs but I'm going round in circles with checking a few things. Do I need to get somebody in to put these things right before we start to decorate(over the next 5 years!) I would pay for a proper...

Very old but brand new BICC 3/029 cable reels

I've found www.parcelmonkey.com useful for sending items that would otherwise be not viable via the post office, e.g. wheels, tyres etc, Might be an option for somebody at the other end of the country that really wants the old cable for some reason for another.
