Old floor screed cracked badly! Rip out?

I’m having a log burner put in in less than 4 weeks with slate hearth. Whole house is being renovated but having fireplace and burner done first. I removed the old laminate and underlay to expose the thermoplastic tiles, removed the tiles (wore mask and PPE), and the screed underneath is...

*ULTIMATE* "are my damn walls load-bearing" thread! Please HELP!!

I'm now wondering if I should just put plywood flooring all over the upstairs floorboards, even if the floorboards aren't in great shape. Would solidly fixed plywood squeeze the old floorboards tight so it's a nice solid, non-creaking floor?

*ULTIMATE* "are my damn walls load-bearing" thread! Please HELP!!

Jesus I just realised we already took away the door-frame area between bedroom A and B which linked them together above the door frame head with two blocks resting on top of it. Thankfully even with a firm kick the wall isn't budging.

*ULTIMATE* "are my damn walls load-bearing" thread! Please HELP!!

Thanks for the reply. Would two acros either side of the wall be enough? And by take out lateral support do you mean cutting floorboards up to nearest joists?

*ULTIMATE* "are my damn walls load-bearing" thread! Please HELP!!

Please bear with. I know this is a long thread but I've taken forever gathering everything to make this. I've posted here before asking about one particular upstairs wall in my renovation house that needs to come down and if it's load-bearing or not. But after some research I really don't...

    Wiring a replacement ceiling lamp

Thanks again everyone! My nan was very pleased with her new light! (Transformer had blown on her very old dimmer switch so had to get a new one and replace that as well)

    Wiring a replacement ceiling lamp

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. Forgot to mention the light is actually from Dunelm! It's alarming they mislabelled the instructions! Thank you, I appreciate it. So if I've read it right, would this be correct?

    Wiring a replacement ceiling lamp

Edit: sorry accidentally cut the title and hit post. Basically my Nan needs a new light fitting... First of all, she tried the spark route and he said no it’s not worth the petrol to come out for one light. I brought the instructions home with me... but I can’t make sense of them Firstly her...

    Oak sleeper retaining wall plan

Can you elaborate more on the asbestos cement drain? Is it similar to in my illustration?

    Oak sleeper retaining wall plan

Yeah the other half nixed that idea straight away. She said it looks awful. BUT... I think I've found a solution that's not too bad on the eyes if you select the colour and surprisingly the other half is happy to go with it! But Noseall, do you think the way the sleepers will be fixed to...

    Oak sleeper retaining wall plan

How high is yours going? And yeah mine is right next to a public footpath so it has to never ever fall over, even if it is only half a metre high haha. I might try to figure out the paving route then for steps. When you said "or gravel" did you mean having gravel treads or as hardcore for the...

    Oak sleeper retaining wall plan

Noseall after a quick thought and how decking is designed to be anti-slip I thought I'd Google, it and lo and behold Would having these for treads be a much better option?

    Oak sleeper retaining wall plan

See, that's my problem. I'd feel a tit making it up as I go along because I'm new to all this and feel a bit conscious of the looks by passerbys who might possibly know what they're doing. I had to choose a completely exposed, outdoor task as my first didn't I? But then that's getting messed...

    Oak sleeper retaining wall plan

Damn. I might have to go the paving treads route then!

    Oak sleeper retaining wall plan

Are your sleepers pine? Hence the 10 years? Because I’ve read that oak can last 20 years or even beyond if they’re kept from build up of water. And the other half wanted the paving treads but I thought it looked hideous clashing with wood when Googling, but now I might consider it. How are you...

    Oak sleeper retaining wall plan

As I said, I already have the sleepers though from being tossed around by that driveway builder whom I shall be review bombing soon. Surely leaving the step treads rough sawn, grainy and not sanding them will keep them from being slippery?

    Oak sleeper retaining wall plan

Sounds great. 3x higher than mine then! If that's how mine is normally done I'll proceed with it then. The stainless steel dowels are a bit pricey but hopefully with how sturdy it'll be and shielded from water build up, it'll last the ages! Still open to more suggestions or comments though!

    Oak sleeper retaining wall plan

That's an interesting one. I'm assuming your sleepers will be on their side, so 200mm high? How high will yours be?
