Replacing fence posts in retaining wall recess

Managed to set a whole one post today. Though I'm hoping it should speed up a bit now I know what I'm doing. I did end up cutting the post by 100mm in order that they match up with the one my gate is going to close onto when I move it, that's a 1.8m post that will be surface mounted. Have the...

Replacing fence posts in retaining wall recess

Finally found the time and energy to clear out the holes. Turns out the slots are only 500mm deep so I'll have to trim the 2.4m posts down slightly or have a 1.9m fence. Borrowed the 4yr old's trowel to get the spoil out from the hole.

Replacing fence posts in retaining wall recess

Aye, it's more though of getting it into the channels and behind the post that fills me with dread. The Durapost is an I section and I aim to get this encased as much as possible to avoid voids and bond it to the wall. Thinking a plan of attack might go something like this: Mix up a fairly...

Replacing fence posts in retaining wall recess

That's just it, getting concrete into a 25mm gap will... Interesting.

Replacing fence posts in retaining wall recess

Well the old fence came out without a fight. No concrete, no bolts or shoes, just semi compacted sub-base. The holes are only about 350mm down so need digging down a bit, and probably enlarging cross section in the process. I think I have a plan to dig the holes deeper (or a list of things to...

Replacing fence posts in retaining wall recess

Explained already, that's my neighbour's side, it's a boundary wall.

Replacing fence posts in retaining wall recess

Thanks for your thoughts. Maybe I'm naive, but I think they might not be too badly rotted, just possibly not secured very well (haven't found any concrete yet) in which case I'm hoping they come out relatively cleanly.

Replacing fence posts in retaining wall recess

Sleeping on this, I'm more certain that I'll just use the Durapost steel posts. This should allow a good inch around most of the post and fully bond it to the wall if I can do it right. Most videos I see show the post in place and then concrete/post-crete poured around it. However in the recess...

Replacing fence posts in retaining wall recess

I should add that I'm strongly leaning towards some kind of hit & miss panelling to reduce wind pressure on the wall, and like I say, it's in a pretty sheltered spot anyway.

Replacing fence posts in retaining wall recess

Sorry for the confusion, the pic with the wall, that's from my neighbour's side, just to demonstrate the height of it. My path is roughly 100mm from the top of the wall. That's about the size of it except the holes will be 3x3, or probably more like 3x5 or so by the time I've wiggled the posts...

Replacing fence posts in retaining wall recess

Along the side of my property is a retaining wall dropping about 750mm to my neighbour's property. A fence stands on top of this with the 75mm posts on my half (the fence is mine on the deed plan) recessed into slots in the wall. These posts are not secure, they may well be rotten and don't...

    Deck <50mm above grade

Thanks for your reply. I think you're right, supporting the frame on piers is going to be the way forward.

    Deck <50mm above grade

Yeah I'll incorporate a fall to the deck, at whatever gradient is recommended (2%?) I was thinking of installing a soakaway under the deck, although probably not immediately and technically it would be against building regs. The lower path will drain down to an ako.

    Deck <50mm above grade

Just realised I can use spacers to fix a ledger to the retaining wall without risk of it getting damp. One issue is the bolt for it would be perilously close to the top of the block, possibly fixed by using a shallower cladding for the top of the wall such as brick slips.

    Deck <50mm above grade

Looking for some advice on planning a small deck, probably less than 3x3m. The garden is currently excavated about 250mm below where I want the surface to be. I'd like for beds to be within 50mm of this level and (stone slab) paths to and from flush with it. All the info I've seen on ground...

    Shuttering for circular patio base.

Cheers, yeah I thought about that, works out expensive, though they'd be reusable at least. Not sure I'd get enough use to make it worth the investment.

    Shuttering for circular patio base.

oh yeah? ok. I wondered if it would be flexible enough and strong enough, but I'll be happy if you're right as it's half the price.

    Shuttering for circular patio base.

Can anyone advise on the best sheet material for forming a 2.8m circle to form a concrete base for a patio. In truth it will actually be ring, essentially a small retaining wall which I can fill with sub-base, so a 2.4m diameter form inside the 2.8m, 100mm above the current grade and about 150mm...

    Concrete mix to screed patio

I have a concrete slab outside my house that previously had concrete slabs laid on a dry sand and cement mixer. Both of those have now been removed and I'd like to re-screed before laying foam underlay and artificial grass. My reason for this is the slab is very rough and it also pools water...

22mm up to combi, 15mm everywhere else?

Thanks, it's not the main I'm replacing but the supply pipe from the front door to the back of the house, that's currently 15mm and pondering using 22mm as the replacement.
