    Feeding new radiator in extension

I'm slowly building a ground floor extension, and where the original house wall was (which is coming out) there was a large radiator, with pipes coming up through the concrete floor (1970s build, if that helps). This is now capped off temporarily, but I need to feed a new radiator in the...

Extension floor crossing original foundations - how is this done?

Hi. I'm nearly at the point in my extension where the old ground floor wall is going to come out, and then I need to finish the floor. The new extension oversite is to have 120mm of celotex and then 65mm of screed on it to bring it up to the floor level of the existing floor. However, I don't...

Joists in new flat roof getting wet

I take it that it's needed then?

Joists in new flat roof getting wet

In short, ground floor extension with flat roof... it can't be roofed properly until the dormer is built, which won't happen for a while due to delays and weather. So I now have a load of joists that I've fitted, which are getting wet in the rain. I've put DPC over them to try to stop them...

    Steel Beam Level Issue

Thanks Tony, that's a relief. I guess it's one of those things that you need someone with experience to tell you it's OK... Much appreciated.

    Steel Beam Level Issue

Sorry, I didn't make it clear. The beam is level left to right (along its length) but its not level back to front - it's tilted so that if you were looking at the end of it, the web would not be vertical, it would be about 2 degrees off.

    Steel Beam Level Issue

I'm (slowly) doing a ground floor extension to my chalet bungalow. I've got a builder who's done the blockwork and prepping for the steels to be put in, and they are now in place. There are two 3.5m (ish) 152x152 beams in place. The SE specced a flat plate join between the two (with two M12...

Propping for Purlin when steel is installed

Dear All. I'm (eventually!) building an extension to my chalet bungalow. GF extension, plus a larger rear dormer. The existing roof has a large purlin (200x70mm) in it, which goes across the entire building, just above FF ceiling level. The new plan calls for steel across the building, which...

Timber size to bolt to steel beam

I'm (slowly!) moving towards actually getting my extension built, and in the roof there's an RSJ that will be supporting the new dormer. The SE drawings show a 203x133 UB25 beam, with timber each side bolted to it, and below it will be the new roof joists (as in the diagram attached, circled in...

Replacing a First Floor Lintel which supports the roof?

Does anyone know who I should be searching for to find a company who would take this work on - in terms of replacing the existing lintel? This is the one part of the build that is keeping me awake at night - pretty much everything else is something I'm OK with, but replacing the lintel without...

Replacing a First Floor Lintel which supports the roof?

Thanks again Woody - much appreciated. Just amazes me that I get clear, direct answers from people here, whereas it takes days (sometimes over a week) to get any response from my SE, and when I do, it's of the "well, you didn't ask the right question" ilk, rather than clear, actionable advice.

Replacing a First Floor Lintel which supports the roof?

Thanks both - much appreciated. Tony - No, the SE hasn't provided anything other than sizes, so I'll see what he has to say on that front. Woody - Sorry to be dumb, do you mean that there would be two props - one from ground floor level to first floor, and one from there to support the purlin...

Replacing a First Floor Lintel which supports the roof?

I've got planning permission and SE calcs done for an extension. House is a chalet bungalow with an existing rear dormer (which was done back in 83), and this will be replaced with a larger dormer. As a result, there's a 203x133 beam needed in the loft space, and to support that on one outer...
