    Another dying skill?

Vernier use is still being taught at an undergrad level at my old place - used more or less exclusively with travelling microscopes, or with those students needing to machine in the mechanical workshops. It's not a skill that's dieing yet, but there is resistance from students to use these...

Good solvent for Bostik flash-band goo?

I haven't tried it with flash-band, but WD40 is surprisingly good at getting sticky stuff off everything.

    Do you kill spiders?

I'm afraid I'm someone who despises small scurrying things. I may attempt to catch a spider, but my instinct is to just get rid of it. If there is a chance that it will hide, in the time it takes me to find a method to remove it, it will likely get squished :( Fortunately, since I've rid my...

Need a smart thermostat for Vaillant boiler

And, as we've found with 2nd gen Nest recently, Google etc. are ultimately in control, when they turn the servers off!

Need a smart thermostat for Vaillant boiler

I'm afraid I would partially disagree with you here. The Hive is a load compensating smart stat. Utilising learning algorithms to understand how quickly the house warms, together with internet forecasting and information from other users, it can control temperatures far better than a tradition...

    Sailing

I've been a crew member on a couple of cruiser races. The absolute minimum you should get are some good gloves - I learnt that the hard way after ripping my hands to shreds on the ropes. We did quite well in the race though!

Post the best photo you took today

If you are anywhere close to a yacht club, see if they offer a course, or know anyone who does. I did mine at a local club, it was so much more personal than an online course; it got me great local knowledge and an 'in' into the club, if you did want to use their facilities and berthing. Our...

Pretence of being train or a dog.

"Pejorative" is an interesting, non-common word to use as a search term. Amongst others, there are a few notorious former posters that use that specific word with a high frequency.

    UPVC replacement sealed unit

Don't trust Google! Although the tape doesn't need to be there for any structural purposes, it also doesn't need to be removed. Simply keep it in place!

    Meross MTS200 thermostat wiring (again)

Nothing would go dangerously wrong; the switched Live wire is either going to be Live or not. When troubleshooting, it doesn't really matter (In Terms of the electrics) if it is Live when it should be dead, or the other way around! Blue is N. If the wiring diagram of the original stat is...

    Meross MTS200 thermostat wiring (again)

Can we have a picture of the rear of the Meross and how you have attempted to wire it? - there are multiple versions available. Along with your actuators, the old thermostat is operating an N/C contact - try moving your switched live wire from N/O to N/C on the Meross, and see what happens.

No new Nest Thermostats for Europe?

It may not suit everyone, but if the facility is there, why not use it? Personally, on a late November day coming home with a new born, after staying an unexpected extra few days in the ward; it was pretty reassuring being able to turn the heating on remotely and knowing it was at the correct...

No new Nest Thermostats for Europe?

I found the Google source - according to them... Apparently, we're unique! https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Blog/Support-changes-to-our-earliest-generation-Nest-Learning-Thermostats/ba-p/713068

No new Nest Thermostats for Europe?

We've been waiting a good while now, after the introduction of the 4th gen stat, to see if it would make its way over to this side of the pond. Now it appears that will not happen. On top of that, support for the older 1st and 2nd generation stats also looks set to be dropped; losing internet...

Electric Fan Heater Thermal Cut Off

Speculatively, looking at the glass envelope on the heating elements, these appear to be a quartz glass IR elements. Do they start to glow red, before the cut-out (if it is that) operates? I may be wrong, but if this was set to the lowest heat setting with a single 500W element, I doubt an over...

    Portable AC venting

I've had the same thoughts. You can get acrylic sheets cut to size, with pre-drilled holes very reasonably... https://www.cutmy.co.uk/plastic/acrylic-perspex-sheets/clear/5mm/high-gloss/L300-W700/ It should be possible to simply clip it, or wedge it into the opening. Alternatively, as I...
