    Damp room under stairs

Thank you. I hadn't thought of an extractor fan but that would help! I don't often get flooded - and the sandbags work well - but I do really want to be able to use that room.

    Damp room under stairs

Thanks so much for your insight! The building is in a bit of a "dip" if that makes any sense (will take a photo) so I am not sure how to divert water away as it gathers in a little channel at the base of the building. I didn't know you could get mould-resistant paint but I will be investing...

    Damp room under stairs

Thanks. That is really helpful. I could take the door off, and if it doesn't make any difference, I could put it back on. I was also thinking about putting a dehumidifier in there - one of those rechargable ones which you just have on all the time. I've got boxes with damp crystals in there...

    Damp room under stairs

Thanks for your reply. Yes, they are. It opens into the porch. I was wondering if a ventilation thing / airbrick like the one in the porch might help.

    Damp room under stairs

I would be grateful for any advice on how to handle this. It's an unventilated little cubby hole under stairs and the damp gets bad as you can see from the black mould which I cleaned off a couple of months back. It gets flooded when the rain is really bad, but I've put sandbags up which helps...

    Rat-proofing my patio doors

Just looked it up: 2.4 miles. I let him go in a hedge on an embankment. Do you think he'll still hitch a lift?

    Rat-proofing my patio doors

So the rat turned up in my neighbour's house. In the loo, to be precise. While he was sitting on it. He put some traps out and of course one caught the rat while he was away so I had to deal with it. I feel a bit guilty having moved it away from its family and friends but at least we didn't kill...

    Rat-proofing my patio doors

So I'm not killing off the rat unless I absolutely have to. It does its stuff and I do mine, as long as our paths don't cross... the dog is useless, bless him. If I'm ever attacked he won't do anything, just watch dispassionately until I'm dead. Then he'll eat me. B&Q weren't much help but I...

    Rat-proofing my patio doors

Nearly died the other night when a rat the size of a small donkey came into my sitting room via the patio doors. I've been leaving them open as I don't have any other windows in my sitting room, and my dog can go in/out. Obviously it's not something I can continue to do! I have an insect mesh...

    Small brackets for house plants

That calculation makes it a lot easier to find what I'm looking for - thank you. These would be inside and I'm wondering if people actually have hanging baskets inside or if it it's a weird idea.

    Painting / covering kitchen cupboards

I hadn't thought about just getting doors. In an ideal world I'd replace the whole lot but I don't have a job and need to eat first and foremost! These photos show the damage. If I can glue it, that'll be easier but I did like the idea of at least changing the colour.

    Small brackets for house plants

Thanks but they're much bigger than I need.. The B and Q chap said smaller ones didn't exist.

    Small brackets for house plants

I have some hooks to put up a few house plants in hangars (small ones). I've been told I need to get actual brackets like the big ones I have outside for hanging baskets - but when I went into B&Q they looked at me blankly and said they didn't sell anything like that. Will hooks which are...

How to fix a broken (garage door) lock (Ed.)

Thanks for your replies. My friend's dad came round and sorted it - it was something to do with a self-tapper which had knackered the thread? Or something. Certainly not something I could have done by myself! Just as well given that absolutely nobody (Garage Door Co, Wessex Doors, etc.) were...

How to fix a broken (garage door) lock (Ed.)

My up-and-over garage door lock has broken and now I can only open/close the door from inside the garage. I have to turn the lever to the side to release the side locks and then pull the door down from the top. It's one like this: the mechanism seems to have come loose and things sprang out all...
