My up-and-over garage door lock has broken and now I can only open/close the door from inside the garage. I have to turn the lever to the side to release the side locks and then pull the door down from the top.

It's one like this: the mechanism seems to have come loose and things sprang out all over the place, but the problem is I don't know what goes where or what if anything is missing! Any advice would be gratefully received. Thank you.

The obvious thing missing, in your photo, is the wire between the door handle, and the latch at the top of the door. There should be a thin steel rope, similar to those leading to the side latches, going from the handle, up to the latch, to release that when you turn it.

It will need to be a specific length, but any bicycle shop should be able to make one up for you - just like a bowden cable, but without the outer jacket.

[EDIT] forget that, I see the wire is in place, and is white, unlike the side ones which are silver coloured.

Thanks for your replies. My friend's dad came round and sorted it - it was something to do with a self-tapper which had knackered the thread? Or something. Certainly not something I could have done by myself! Just as well given that absolutely nobody (Garage Door Co, Wessex Doors, etc.) were willing to try and help me. I really appreciate the posts on here. Thank you!
