    Question about knocked-through living room

Almost 3m. I mean there has got to be something in there or else the whole thing would collapse very quickly surely? Yeah probably, it's just the dinky one on the end of a tape measure. Having just googled angle beads, that would make sense. As you can probably tell I know nothing about...

    Question about knocked-through living room

Just curious about how my house is constructed (without having to knock through plaster to work it out), really. I live in a 2-up 2-down Victorian terraced with a through lounge. Only been there a year so I think the work was done a long time ago. The wall above the removed one, that separates...

    Crack in corner of wall

Evening all, spotted a crack in the top corner of the first floor front room that goes across the external wall (left) and the party wall between next door (right). mid-Victorian terrace. It's about 0.5mm thick at widest part. No idea how long it's been there and not seen it until now (was just...

    Crack under window

Not that I can see. I've put masking tape over at a few points and just traced the line with a biro (the crack is consistently no thicker than that at any point) so if it does get bigger I'll know. Thanks!

    Crack under window

Evening all, Just got home from a weekend away and found this at the corner of the front bedroom window. It's probably about 1/3 mm across. I can't see anything wrong on the outer wall and the window itself doesn't seem to be stiff or out of joint, BUT it looks like this has been painted over...

Cracks in stud wall above doorframe

Well, no. Free consultation. I might be a panicky bugger but I'm not an idiot!

Cracks in stud wall above doorframe

Home now and photographed it. Now I look at it again though it looks more vertical than horizontal? Also it's almost certainly a stud wall - sounds hollow when knocked, and I had a quick look under the insulation in the loft and it looks like stud with vertical...well, studwork.

Cracks in stud wall above doorframe

Yeah I realised after I posted that wasn't the best place for it! Mod has moved it now. Will pop a photo up when I get home from work. But thanks for the info, slightly less panicky now :D

Cracks in stud wall above doorframe

Morning all, A structural engineer will be taking a look at this in the new year, but if anyone has any thoughts, the more the better... Just noticed a diagnonal crack (less than 0.5mm thick) in the back bedroom, emanating from the corner of the doorframe on an internal wall. It must be new as...

    Rot in purlin?

Thanks everyone. Going to get a structural engineer in to take a look. Hopefully it's stable / watertight enough to last a couple of years until we get the loft converted properly...if not, bye bye Xmas bonus (and then some). Sigh.

    Rot in purlin?

Almost certainly, but we're not planning on doing that for a couple of years yet. Just thinking in the shorter term if the roof is about to cave in!

    Rot in purlin?

Nope, it seems to be straight. I don't think I was clear enough earlier (sorry) - I was aware of the bodge job done with the newer timbers and was planning on getting that sorted in the longer term, probably when getting the loft conversion done. What I was concerned about in the immediate...

    Rot in purlin?

Evening all, Just went up to the loft to get something and noticed the rear purlin looking a bit dodgy (see photo). It doesn't feel wet or soft / brittle but something ain't right. The thrown together structural work was there when we moved in (surveyor said it was "in a serviceable condition")...
