There is a mute button yep, but it only mutes it for a few hours. There doesn't seem to be a way to make it stay muted.

I would recommend Proton Mail (formerly ProtonMail) to people looking for a new email client. It's free, and supposedly uses encryption that protects you in ways Gmail and others don't.
