Found an old window behind wall - can I reinstate without planning?

Red window in the illustration and the second pic is a close up. Neighbour complained about blue illustrated window in initial plans (which got approved anyway). The red window is fairly hidden behind a sparse bush (that we don’t own) so not exactly invasive.

Found an old window behind wall - can I reinstate without planning?

I found this old window during a kitchen demo. It looks onto the front / driveway of my neighbours semi detached houses (which are about 50/60ft away). They have no front garden and large back gardens so it’s not invasive in that sense. Is it possible to reinstate this old feature without...

Cement over Lime - 150 yo building (remove or leave)

Hi all, I'm renovating a very old Coach House and one of the many issues with the building is damp and condensation. A possible cause is likely the cement repointing (which is also damaging the external brickwork all round the house). Having chipped away some of the cement (see picture...

Insulating roof (internal) - very old house

It’s not, however it’s in a conservation area so a bit of red tape around external alterations.

Insulating roof (internal) - very old house

Can anyone help me translate Building Regs for a project like this. Are they intentionally vague and broad in every description? I just want to know if I have to adhere to the 270mm insulation is I was to do this? Do those regs apply to new builds only or old buildings that are being altered...

Insulating roof (internal) - very old house

Thanks John. I think this might be the only way forward if I am to get a thick enough insulation to be effective and not hide the beams - I will need all the space/depth I can get. I was hoping to avoid this as naturally ripping it all back can cause or expose more issues / cost more money..

Insulating roof (internal) - very old house

Thank you mate. The place has an E rating with a C as achievable. Very helpful!

Insulating roof (internal) - very old house

Great - That’s reassuring to hear. Thank you. Is it just a case of insulated boarding between the beams as tight as you can get given they are bowed and then fill any gaps with expanding foam then tape and joint everywhere? (Appreciating this is not the “best” option, I’m looking for most...

Insulating roof (internal) - very old house

I’m not entirely sure to be honest wether insulating the roof is enough. I’m certainly open to advice and would consider insulating all of the walls, but again my question is, if i want to rent this house out later on, does the amount of insulation used need to comply with regs? If so, that’s...

Insulating roof (internal) - very old house

You wouldn’t attempt to insulate on top of the plasterboards?

Insulating roof (internal) - very old house

Correct! Running theme throughout the house. Stone walls and next to no insulation anywhere.

Insulating roof (internal) - very old house

I’m renovating an Old coach house to live in the for next 4-6 years before letting it out. The house is upside down and the livingroom upstairs is absolutely freezing. The roof is made up of (from what I can tell) slate, membrane, a very thin (3-4 inches) layer of some kind of rockwool then...

Bedroom wall mould - stone cottage

Hi all, Another issue with our 19th century coach house - Bedroom mould. We’re having quite significant building work done in the other end of the house so I'm hoping to do smaller jobs like this myself to keep costs down. Any advice much appreciated. Info below: - the room is on the...

Building a chimney breast for wood burner

Two questions: 1. Can you build a chimney breast for a wood-burner of a wooden frame or does it have to be metal? 2. Should you insulate the wall (stone wall - no cavity or insulation) behind the new chimney breast before building it against said wall? For context, my house is upside down...
