Unfortunately I can't get into the ceiling void at the moment. I would need to cut a hole in the plasterboard in the ceiling. Could it be as simple as a lose wire in the junction box? I think the previous owners were keen DIYers but nothing seems to have been done too great.

No, the first picture is the switch that does wall light + ceiling light. 2nd picture is the switch for exterior light + ceiling light.

Thanks for the reply. I definitely wouldn't be fitting it myself. Might have gave it at go if the current wiring wasn't so unique . I take it for all the extra benefits the more expensive model gives it's not worth twice the price.

That black wire goes from live in the spur into 2 core flex and disappears to what looks like the boiler. The other black cable in the 2 core flex goes into a connector alongside a brown wire which also looks like it goes to the boiler. It certainly doesn't go to the stat receiver as I can see...

The brown wire goes into a block with a black wire that i think comes from the stat receiver. The black wire goes into a block with a grey wire which I also think comes from the stat receiver.

Yeah the fused spur is right next to the stat receiver in the 2nd picture. I will post a picture tomorrow. My plan is to replace the kitchen so I just want rid of the programmer.
