Dodgy earth… well no earth at all

Yeah they did. Couple of circuits needed cpc running as cables rather than using the dodgy old conduit. RCD now working. To be fair the landlord was great. People are just scared to talk to landlords in London because they think they will be seen as expensive trouble makers and then get...

Dodgy earth… well no earth at all

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their responses. Landlord was quick to react - electrician confirmed that there was no effective earthing via the conduit or any other method for that matter. New cabling run and tested. All safe and sound !

Dodgy earth… well no earth at all

Yep. I’m still here. So far the landlord has been responsive and the sockets in Question have been placed off limits and the microwave which seems to have gone leaky has gone to the tip. Was interested to learn about the old steel conduits in these systems being used as the cpc. Will update...

Ah I see . So the conduit would act as cpc up to the socket back box ( ideally ) then jump across to the socket via a link from the metal chassis ( obviously completely omitted in this case. ). This is very helpful. Thanks. Landlord has been informed and seems to be responding...

Dodgy earth… well no earth at all

thanks , The main issue is in the double socket that the appliances plug in has no earth - literally nothing. It has 2 reds and 2 blacks …. Unsheathed. Like someone stripped out a bunch of old t+e and used it on the whole installation. I kid you not.

Dodgy earth… well no earth at all

Crazy …. Looks like it was put in by a complete chancer tbh. I never trust a CU has no grommets at all in any of the knock outs … this thing has none: a 10mm earth going in but only one earth coming out. All the t&e cables are stripped of the sheathing back to the red and black. ( outside...

Dodgy earth… well no earth at all

Thanks everyone. It’s a rental - it looks so wrong I thought there must be some version of code that I didn’t know about that exempts old properties from needing earths??? The washing machine is in a spur that goes back to a part of the ring at a double socket. I only came equipped...

Dodgy earth… well no earth at all

Ok so my daughter lives in a flat in London , she told me some of her friends have been getting ‘minor shocks’ from the washing machine and microwave. I told her not to use the them and I’d take a look ( thinking it was a few volts floating and a bad earth on a spur). I turned up with a...
