Gas detection re water leak for parent loathe to let people in - insurance or direct?

The plumber I got in is meant to be experienced. Just a bit concerning that the Thames Water engineer was adamant that what was under my mum's sink was the stop cock when the plumber was adamant that it was just to isolate the cold tap. Guess I could get another plumber in to have a look...

Gas detection re water leak for parent loathe to let people in - insurance or direct?

Ultimately, even if I went ahead and organised gas detection, a main stopcock would need to be installed anyway? Just thinking of getting everything sorted within 3 months, as my mum is bound to cancel some appointments made to fix it all.

Gas detection re water leak for parent loathe to let people in - insurance or direct?

From memory, it's a solid floor. So rather than going ahead with gas detection firstly, a main stopcock is the best plan of action? I don't have a clue about this kind of thing so feel free to explain as if you were talking to a child!

Gas detection re water leak for parent loathe to let people in - insurance or direct?

All a bit overwhelmed by a situation I'm in, so hope it's OK to post this here. I'm looking for a bit of advice on a situation at my mother's property - she's 86 and was diagnosed with dementia 2 years ago, and I have power of attorney which she asked me to apply for 5 years ago. She's had...

It's the same lock (and key) that was in the door when I moved in over 20 years ago.

Mortice lock getting trickier to open from outside

I usually get them cut at Timpsons (most reliable keycutter near me) and that spare is the best. So ultimately, no new lock needed, just a case of a worn key? Thanks for all of your advice by the way.

Mortice lock getting trickier to open from outside

Right, the spare key works fine, having tried it a good few times, though it didn't latch on perfectly one time - guess that's just how spare cut keys go? (Told you I was ignorant about all of this). I can see the top edge of the original Chubb key having been worn down, as you can see in the...

Mortice lock getting trickier to open from outside

I have an issue with the mortice lock on the door of my flat that's in a communal building (3 other flats) - it locks and unlocks fine from the inside, and locks fine too from the outside. However, over the last few days, unlocking it from the outside is getting trickier - if it seems to be...

Burnt bathroom mirror light cover - any need to get electrician out re possible short circuit?

Well the light works fine although there does seem to be a smell of fumes initially when it's on with the cover off.

Burnt bathroom mirror light cover - any need to get electrician out re possible short circuit?

Firstly, I am clueless about electrical matters...right... I am probably being overly cautious but here goes... The cleaner I use came round earlier this morning and sent me a message an hour later when I was out saying that smoke was suddenly coming out from the right hand cover for the...

    Is this a leak?

It's an awkward part of the loft to get to with very limited space to crawl into - from memory, there aren't pipes up there.

    Is this a leak?

Firstly, I'm quite clueless about DIY/home matters - I've had marks on part of the main room ceiling in my top floor flat (with a loft above) for a month or so, but they've particularly worsened over the last week. There's no water coming in through the ceiling but the brown marks are a bit...

Water rising up into shower 1 week after shower drain block "resolved" by recommended company

Thanks for the replies so far. I actually tried running cold water from the kitchen sink (was only running hot water before) and after 30 seconds or so, the water rises up into the shower - so that's both sinks leading to this. After the plumbers left, being slightly dubious, I ran water in...

Toilet's fine, I'm on the second floor & nobody else is having a problem.

Water rising up into shower 1 week after shower drain block "resolved" by recommended company

I've had issues with water rising up into my shower if water in the kitchen or bathroom sink runs for a few weeks. I had this issue 3 years ago and a plumber got a company to come out with a motorised snake to clear it, solving the issue in about 5 minutes. Unfortunately I didn't keep the...
