    Thanks for all the replies....as you all thought with further sanding the marks have come out. regarding the sapwood i asked for some to be left on as i liked the contrast beside the rest of the wood. Hope it ll be ok ! I ve been told its been seasoned for 5 years.

    There is nt a manhole where we join the main,form this soil pipe to the main its only about a yard or two.

    Yeah.The first one downstream is about 30yards away, upstream its about 15 yards.

    I dont have any access beyond this inspection hole. After this it disappears below ground into the sewer.

    Seco. I dont think this inspection hole is big enough to get a proper bung through. It would be a case of an old rag which obviously would be no good.

    Yeah its a screw cap then theres an insert that slides out, the end of which is rounded so as not to impede the stack. There seems to be a good seal on it.

    No cracks and no seals have been disturbed although there is a joint at the level of the door so maybe I ll put some silicon round so I can rule it out. I m at a loss to know what to try next.
