    Noisy system

Can anyone suggest an easy way to test the pump? Scale is unlikely as the water is soft. Other things suggested are reasonably likely but it seems sensible to start with the pump.

    Noisy system

Our central heating system has become very noisy. The house is a large 1950's 5 bedroom house and has a fully pumped, vented system with four zones controlled by zone valves and hot water. In addition rooms without thermostats have thermostatic valves fitted. The boiler is a Trianco...

    Painting exterior wooden door

A common problem is not painting the bottom of the door (or the top for that matter) which allows moisture to penetrate. I believe the standard advice is to apply the same number of coats all round, finishing with two coats of exterior gloss to keep the weather out. Painting the bottom is...

    Choosing a back door

I need to replace my back door and I need some advice as to what to buy. I would not fit upvc for aesthetic reasons. Softwood, I think is out because I don't want a painted finish. Ideally I would like it to match my cabinet doors which are light oak. I have heard it said that oak is...

    How many forum members...

Brilliant :) But why no mention of Part P implications (even if there aren't any!) and the 17th Edition regs

    what plug is this?

When you wanted to get to sleep and somebody had the music on too load, the trick was to take the bulb out of the table lamp, replace it with a threepenny bit and turn the power back on. Instant quiet.

    Moving kitchen window

We have a window in our kitchen 1800 x 1200 which we would like to lower by maybe two courses of bricks. It was above a sink but now is on a blank wall. The first idea was to replace it with french windows, but it wouldn't be in a good position for everyday access so we need to would keep...

    New fittings and Part P

I think I'm just naturally suspicious :) Just because you're not paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

    New fittings and Part P

Thanks for that. The schedule 3B would appear to suggest that you can change fittings and enclosures (which I assume means back boxes) without notification even if in a kitchen. Why then do some manufacturers put date codes on the boxes and fittings?

    New fittings and Part P

If I were to replace the old fittings in my kitchen with modern ones (and did nothing else) would this be subject to notification under Part P? I was under the impression that Part P only applied to fixed wiring, CU's etc and presumably back boxes but not the accessories themselves...

    Concrete fence post repair

I have some fence posts where the concrete has crumbled and the slot is no more. Is there any easy way of repairing them, other than digging out and replacing? Might this happen again - how long should concrete posts last? Any tips on how to get them out easily?

    Removing scratches from travertine

Many thanks for the suggestion. I have found another idea which works quite well. I have a small diamond stone which I use for sharpening silicon carbide router bits. Rubbed on the travertine, it takes just the right amount off and doesn't seem to affect the surface much. Doing it by...

Can I tile straight onto Floor levelling compound?

Tiling adhesive is much more expensive than leveller - I'd get him to come back and add some more until it's nearer true.

    Removing scratches from travertine

I have laid some filled travertine tiles on a kitchen floor and they have been sealed and grouted. I now need to remove some surface scatches caused by manoevring units over the floor. Does anyone have any good ideas for removing scratches? My initial thought was some mild abrasive (maybe...

    Bending kitchen tap tails

Thanks Softus, It's really one of those jobs you have to attack confidently - anyway your technique worked perfectly :)

    Bending kitchen tap tails

I have a new kitchen tap to install with screw in tails which are parallel with no space between them. They are 10mm at the tap, and 15mm at the open end. The instructions say bend the tails to allow clearance for compression fittings - what is the best way to do this? - obviously you only...

Waste size for sink and dishwasher

Just wondered what size waste I should use for a kitchen sink and dishwasher? The thinner size (35mm) would be easier for me because I need to run it behind the built-in dishwasher and there is only 20mm clearance. Chasing it partially into the plaster seems straightforward enough if a bit...

how much does a full bath of water weigh?

Surely a pint of water weighs a pound and a quarter? i.e. 1pint = 1.25lb and 1 gallon = 10 lbs This is in the Uk, slightly different in the US

Where to buy radiators (not Screwfix it seems)?

If you are considering travelling to Chester anyway, you could try PTS - I have bought radiators from them and have found them helpful and their prices are good - just around the corner from Screwfix. 01244 392600 and www.ptsplumbing.co.uk
