    Insulating under wooden floors.

My lounge is floored. There are gaps in the floorboards, and draughts come through. I'm planning to colour twine and seal the gaps with this, which should improve things. However, I'd also like to insulate under the floor, as I did in my current house, and it was very effective. Trouble is I...

    Insulation under florboards.

Thanks deluks, I'll bear those points in mind. I managed to get some wadding, which I'm putting on top of the polyfoam battens before pushing them up against the bottom of the floorboards. The ones I have done so far are a very tight fit, but if any future ones are looser I'll use your string idea.

    Insulation under florboards.

I've sanded and varnished my lounge floor. I also removed one of the two radiators from it. I'm pretty pleased with the effect, but in very cold weather the heating is only just managing to cope. The floor has a 1 metre deep void underneath. I can feel cold coming up from the void. Not huge...

Fixing rope to sash window frame.

Thanks JohnD I actually found what I was looking for via my window cleaner. A zinc plated cord grip, 47p each and the store is only a mile from my house. The big advanatage with this is you put a screw into the frame, and the grip onto the rope which is attached to the counterbalance. You...

Fixing rope to sash window frame.

Is this grabba what I am looking for? Anybody ever used one? The trouble with the nail approach is you can be trying to hammer a nail into a rope which is under tension from the counter balance weight. You need 3 hands...

Fixing rope to sash window frame.

Thanks. The windows have a groove to take the rope and the clamp. Trouble is who produces the clamp. So the nail through the rope it is....

Fixing rope to sash window frame.

I am repairing my 100 year old sash windows. Each frame has a rope which runs over a pulley and is tied to a counterbalance weight. This rope needs to be attached to the side of the window frame. Most of them have roofing nails hammered through the rope and into the wooden frame. This doesn't...

    leaking hot water cylinder.

Capitulation! Its still leaking. OK its coming out of the bandage at a different place. Bought a new cylinder. Looks like Bamber gaspipe got it in one!

    leaking hot water cylinder.

thanks Softus. Well I put some of that liquid metal over the LSX bandages for good measure and, touch wood, it seems to be holding. Hot water back on. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. The original effort with the plumber's mait may have worked if I had drained the tank and put...

    leaking hot water cylinder.

thanks again everybody. I've put 5 layers of bandages with LSX on it. Giving it a couple of hours to cure. If that doesn't work, maybe I'll try that plastic padding, then I guess I'll have to replace the tank before I get my new system in. I'm looking to instal a Worcester Bosch Greenstar...

    leaking hot water cylinder.

thanks guys. Tried the Fernox LSX. Didn't hold. Drained the tank and tried again. Came up in a nice blister presumably because I hadn't left it long enough to cure. Tried again and left it for 4 hours but the water is still forcing its way thru. Its not far from the bottom of a largish tank so I...

    leaking hot water cylinder.

thanks. I'm not brave enough(or knowledgable enough) to try that fluffster. You could be right, corgiman. Tried some plumber's mait, and after 4 applications its still leaking. At least its stenched the flow a little. Trouble is that I want to get a new condensing system, so I'll be doing...

    leaking hot water cylinder.

I have a small hole on the seam on the side of the copper hot water cylinder. Is there any compound that can be applied to the side of the tank to stop the leak for a temporary repair?

Dishwasher upper spray arm not turning

thanks diyisfun. I stripped the feed to the top sprayer. No obvious sign of blockage. I don't have time to take it right back to the pump today. I need to gather some more facts and see if the bottom sprayer is working. What if the pump goes? Will it still fill with water and drain?

Dishwasher upper spray arm not turning

I have a Zanussi DG 6100 W dish washer with an upper spray arm and a lower spray arm. The upper one does not appear to be turning when it is running. a) There does not appear to be any drive mechanism. Does the action of the water getting pumped through it supposed to turn the arm? b) I...

Contact details for a corgi installer.

thanks Kev. That works a treat. I thought I had seen a site like that somewhere. I also got the number by phoning Corgi. Now to wait on the guy phoning me back......

Contact details for a corgi installer.

I had a gas tumble dryer fitted and I liked the way the guy worked. I have his corgi number and his corgi card number, but don't have his phone number. Is there a register anywhere with this information? I want him to install a new boiler for me.

Radiator removal, which way does the nut turn?

Thanks Chris. Nut successfully loosened! I had originally been tightening it and stopped when the pipe started to bend. Its great to have a site like this when you can get access to experience. Back to work!

Radiator removal, which way does the nut turn?

Thanks Chris. You are correct on the left hand side of the radiator. The thread is on the thermostatic valve, and the nut is to the right of that, retained on the radiator pipe by a copper ring. So looking towards the thread from the middle of the radiator, the nut was removed by turning it anti...
